“Where’s Otis?” Gorgo glanced about the apple trees.

The branches and leaves on the tree closest to me rattled. Then Otis jumped down with an apple in his mouth, his locks flew every which way. As he took a bite, he said, “Want an apple? I have plenty now.”

I shook my head. This one was strange.

“What is your destination?” I asked.

“To Drevon castle.” Dawn rested her back against the wagon as her gaze roamed my body up and down. “What about you?”

I knew that look well, and I’d never felt shy about women showing their interest.

“To Whiten and to Mount Skull,” Gorgo answered for me, smacking my back. His way of saying let’s get going.

“No, Michael.” Snow grabbed my arm. “You need to go with us. My mice informed me that Eva and Victus are at the castle now. So that means they got the Gate Key. We need to hurry.”

Markane’s boots crunched on the dead leaves as he came closer to me. He opened his mouth to say something and then he collapsed. Abacus rushed to his friend’s side and dropped beside him.

“What happened?” I examined the two vampires. No arrows flew across the air. No blood on them.

“Is this normal for vamps?” Otis tossed the apple core over his shoulder.

“Were they out in the sun too long?” Tank asked.

Gorgo grunted with annoyance. “Not only do you think vamps are sort of dead and they need to be with dead things, and now you ask if they’ve been in the sun too long? You really know nothing about the vampires.”

Tank puffed out his chest, his deeply hooded eyes narrowing. “That’s better than you calling me a dog, and then saying I’m slow.”

Abacus opened his eyes and pushed up to his knees. He put a hand to Markane’s neck, then lightly slapped his face.

Markane opened his eyes and sucked in a lung full of air. He jolted up as if nothing happened. “What did you do to me?” He glanced about all the angels, as if it were our fault.

Abacus too gasped then stood up and rubbed his temples. His gaze roamed at all of us as if he didn’t know where he was. “I-I had a weird dream. I think. I was in the tunnel when we tried to escape and I hugged Evangeline but called her Joleen.”

“I had the same dream.” Markane raised a hand to shield his eyes from the sunlight. “And Eva—or Joleen—and you, Abacus, the three of us were saying goodbye.”

Gorgo grabbed Abacus’s shoulder. “That was no dream. Something must have happened to Victus or he did something.”

“How do you know?” Dawn, who was still leaning against the wagon crossed her arms.

“Because …” Gorgo’s eyes gleamed in the sunlight. “When I was stuck inside the castle, I heard a bunch of rumors. One of them was about an angel warrior named Joleen who fell in love with the crown prince, Victus. And they had a child. And—”

“Our King Victus?” Abacus swallowed.

Markane scowled. “Do you know another Victus? Of course our Victus.”

Abacus’s eyes widened with terror. “He, I mean we almost killed … her.”

Tank and Otis snarled and partially spread their wings.

“Boys.” Snow’s pitch rose in warning. “Let Gorgo continue.”

Tank and Otis tucked their feathers and stiffened. I snorted. Snow had all the boys under her control.

Gorgo gave a curt nod to Snow. “Victus is the most powerful vampire. He has a special gift no one knew about except for a few, including me. He has the power of compelling others to do his bidding, but he never used it. But he would to save his daughter from being found out.”

“The reason why we assumed she was an orphan whom Victus had adopted,” Markane said. “We never asked, I think. Maybe he made us forget.”

“That’s some crazy shit.” Tank whistled.
