Fire blasted at the end of the hallway and shook the ground. Victus grabbed me in his embrace before his back slammed against the wall from the impact. I was the one with strength and power and yet he tried to protect me.

A boom collapsed parts of the wall, blocking our path and choking the air with smoke and dust. Zander and his team of five warriors came around the bend. Their job was to retrieve the king and queen.

“Asmodeus’s soldiers have blocked the throne room.” Zander released his wings halfway out. “There are too many of them.”

Zander and I were both superiors of the Order of Angels. Though we had fought for the same cause, we were never on the same team.

“Is there another way in?” I asked.

“No.” Zander grabbed my arm and yanked me away from Victus. “We need to get everyone out of here. Joleen, come with me.”

I didn’t realize Zander’s possessive side until I saw him in a new light, and he had called me Joleen. Not Evangeline, but Joleen. The betrayal from someone I had once respected and admired felt worse than getting stabbed in the heart.

“I know another way in. The tunnel,” Victus said.

He rushed ahead and we followed him through a small door by the kitchen and down the spiral staircase. We peeked through a narrow horizontal gap in the back of the room, but we were too late. Asmodeus impaled a sword through the king’s chest, then the queen.

Markane and Abacus grabbed Victus on either side of him, preventing him from running up the stairs that led to a private door behind the throne. Victus’s mouth opened with a silent scream then he curled in on himself.

My heart squeezed and tears stung my eyes. I felt his torment. For the first time in my life, I understood grief.

“We have to go.” Zander broke the horrid moment. “We can’t win this battle. We’ll have to try another day.” Zander faced the angel warriors from his team. “Gather any survivors and head to the forest.”

The OA protected Victus and his people who escaped into the forest. Our goal was to save the crown prince so we could put him on the throne when we killed Asmodeus.

There, Victus and I fell in love and he called me Little Dove. He told me I reminded him of a dove—gentle and precious. Victus was the one who gave me that nickname. Not Zander!

I flew him in my arms to the sky and we made love under the moon and the stars, in the waterfall, and even in the meadows where the spring flowers grew. He loved me unselfishly, all of me.

Then Zander said he received an order from the hierarchy of angels to create an army to get rid of Asmodeus and the demon soldiers. Seraphim blood was given to any men who had demon blood running through their veins, which included Victus.

The Seraphim blood proved to be powerful. These beings became stronger and faster than angels. Their fingernails lengthened to dagger-like weapons. Their eyes turned crimson and veins thickened and pulsated.

They had turned into bedtime-story monsters and they were the mightiest warriors, killing thousands of demon soldiers. Until they could not control their hunger.

To help vampires get accustom to their new life, and also to hide from Asmodeus, Zander led everyone to the cave. Then Zander and his team left to kill Asmodeus’s soldiers.

Life went on. I hid my pregnancy well, but locks of my hair turned black, a startling contrast to my golden tresses. I told everyone I had applied dye to my hair, but in truth I believe my unborn child had released some of her magic to me, changing me forever.

No one knew I gave birth to Nadira except for Victus and his trusted people. Then Zander came back with Levia and a new team. Little did I know then he had planned to decimate the entire race of vampires and even the crown prince himself.

Everything I had seen through the veil I’d thought was through Joleen’s eyes. But this time as tears streamed down my face, I knew without a doubt they were my memories, my past.

I came out of the past gasping like a woman coming out of the water from being under too long. Sunlight beamed down from the dome-glass ceiling in the dead quiet and I blinked from the brightness as all eyes fell on me.

Levia and Asmodeus stood by the dining table where Nadira, my precious daughter, was still unconscious. Rafael was surrounded by the guards. Nothing had changed, except for the love that ran deep in my heart and through all my veins for my child and the man, the crown prince, holding me. His tender gaze said I know you, and a thousand more words of love.

I smiled at Victus, my everything. As my eyes stung with tears, I said with conviction, “My name is Joleen. You and I are two halves …”

He finished with excitement in his tone. “Of the same soul.”

We had so much to say to each other but now was not the time.

Asmodeus smiled grimly while Rafael dropped his shoulders in defeat. Levia paled.

Victus’s grin reached his ears, then he crushed his lips on mine. As he peppered kisses on my face, he whispered, “Let’s get out of here together with our daughter. You are the divine weapon. Now, light up, and bring the lightning and thunder to us.”

I was just about to raise my hand and rain down my power but the door burst open. A tall, dark, and striking man entered, two gorgeous women on either side of him. One blonde with purple ombre, and one brunette with hair in a bun with multiple long pins through it.
