The trio strutted into the room, their cloaks swishing by their ankles, but underneath they wore unique apparels. They stepped with purpose and determination, not a hint of hesitation or fear despite all the demon soldiers, and strode over to Rafael.

I knew their names, but we’d never met in person.

“I expected a welcome party, but seeing King Victus is always a pleasure.” Kristoff offered a mocking bow to Victus. “What do we have here? A ruby coffin. What an insult.”

Kristoff slammed the casket closed, the sound resonating in the air.

“You’re too early,” Asmodeus ground out, inhaling and exhaling swiftly.

Maria, the blonde, flicked dust off her black cloak. “You don’t want us to leave, do you? After all, you did extend an invitation. The guards outside the doors let us in. And a little silver birdy told me you needed assistance. So we came as fast as we could. I hope you don’t mind, but we brought our sentinels with us. You know …” She shrugged. “Just in case.”

Asmodeus stomped closer to them but kept his distance. “What little bird? I sent no one with that message.”

“We weren’t speaking to you, demon.” Vara, the brunette, untied her cloak, letting it pool around her boots, then pulled out two long sharp hairpins from her bun. The ends of the metal hair piece glinted with diamonds.

“Then to whom?” Asmodeus shoved the divine dagger in his waistband. “And it’s king to you. Don’t you forget it.”

Kristoff took the hairpins from Vara and kissed her hand. “Thank you, darling.” Then he inched closer to Asmodeus as he tapped the pins on his palm. “Was it a silver bird or a red bird, or maybe both. They were beautiful though.”

Snow and Dawn? Dare I hope?

“And we weren’t talking to you, Asmodeus.” Kristoff came closer to us. “We were talking to our king, the real king.” He gave a curt nod to Victus, then to me.

Victus’s eyes grew wider, confused.

“Something happened to us on the way.” Kristoff wiggled the hairpins in the air. “I don’t know how to explain it and … I don’t want to.”

“We remember everything.” Maria pulled out a shiny dagger from her waist.

“Everything.” Vara waggled her eyebrows.

“To everything!” Kristoff said, then flung the hairpins like darts, one at a time.

A blur of silver streaked across the air.

One impaled Asmodeus’s jugular and the other Levia’s. Levia stumbled back and yanked out the pin, unleashing a geyser of blood. She shrieked and scrambled under the table in a desperate attempt to seek coverage and buy time for her wound to heal.

As Asmodeus gasped for breath, struggling to take out the hairpin, which had lodged so deeply his seeking fingers couldn’t grasp it, the glass dome shattered.

Shards rained down, barely missing the dining table. Victus spun with me in his arms and pushed us toward the wall as the shards bounced off his back.

Michael, the hybrid, with his glorious white wings flapped and he pounded the ground in front of us. His heart-shaped wings closed, then came Markane, Abacus, Gorgo, Dawn, and Snow with two mice on her shoulders, one on each side. One black, the other white with a shorter tail, just like the ones I had seen at Victus’s lair.

Tank landed last with a pound of his fist to the ground, splintering the stone all the way down to the door.

“Perfect entrance.” Kristoff gave a curt nod to Snow. “Just like we planned.”

“Hello again, Michael.” Maria winked.

“Gorgo!” Asmodeus trembled, his voice bouncing off the walls. “You’re no brother of mine. You’re dead.”

“Good.” Gorgo dusted glass shards off his tunic. “I want that written in stone. That fucker is no brother of mine.”

“Tank. Otis. Help me,” Rafael cried out, his voice desperate.

Oh, please. He sounded so pathetic. No, wait. I had to say something before they freed him. But then what Tank said next floored me.

He pointed at Rafael and flashed a malicious grin, the kind that said I’m going to tear you to shreds. “Ssi-bal. I thought of you like a brother. I would have died for you, you motherfucker. Get ready to kneel, fallen. Or shall I call you Angel of Many Faces?”
