Was that my doing? Was it my imagination? No, my friends peered up at the sky too.

“I love you, Little Dove. Be the light inside you,” Victus said and spun to dodge a skeletal arm that swung over his head instead of through his chest.

Victus’s words held power and strength, emboldening me, even though he sounded far away as I gravitated off the ground. Below me the team battled countless demon spirits coming at them from every angle. If the war didn’t end soon, we were doomed from exhaustion.

“What are you doing?” The beast sounded scared and swiped a hand at me.

I flinched, prepared to flee, but his arm went right through the light engulfing my body. He couldn’t touch me.

“No. Impossible.” The beast stomped, shaking the earth even more. “Rafael told me he made you forget you had such power.”

Anger flared through my bones, but I had to lock away the hatred toward Rafael and focus on Asmodeus.

The white fire from the sky didn’t slow down, and as it came toward us, I made out the golden drakon with her mighty wings flapping, then the stunning lady I had seen in the cave. She extended her hand out to me as if to say, “Take what I have to offer you.” And so I did.

She dove through the beast’s back first, then she entered my body, searing warmth spread into every inch of my bones, and we burst together like an ethereal light.

Time seemed to stand still in this void, clouded by white mist. Had I died? But Victus appeared next to me and held my hand. Did we both die?

He smiled, then faced forward and dropped to his knees. “Mother.”

Surely she was not his blood, right? But I could think of no other reason to call her Mother.

The woman from Mount Skulls stood in a halo of light, her shimmering golden hair cascading over an alabaster dress. The air shifted and the light dimmed as her features underwent a subtle transformation—her nose narrower and more delicate, her high cheekbones prominent, and her serious face now smiling.

The former Queen Elinor. Victus’s mom? He knew. How?

I kneeled.

“Rise.” Queen Elinor came toward us, her dress swishing across the mist.

Victus and I rose. Unlike the last meeting, she grabbed us into an embrace and kissed our cheeks. I had not expected that and was rather in shock. It happened so fast, I didn’t recall if I returned the hug.

“Did we die?” It was a ridiculous question and I had spoken before I could stop myself.

Elinor’s eyes gleamed with amusement. “No, my child, but you don’t have much time. I’m here to make a bargain. I’m not allowed to intervene and there may be consequences for me, but I will help you win the war and restore the land. But you must promise me something in return.”

Gratitude filled my heart with hope.

“Anything,” Victus said and I nodded.

“When the war is over, you must save the children. Many will have lost their parents. They will be homeless, hungry, and unprotected from evil beings. They must not fall into the wrong hands. Show them that there is good in this world, that they were worth fighting for. Teach them to be better and to not make the same mistakes as the generation before. And that is all I ask of you.”

“What will happen to the veil when the war is over?” Victus asked.

“My duty would have been fulfilled.” She sounded so somber.

How did Victus know she was his mother?

As if Elinor knew what I was thinking she said, “I revealed myself to my son through the veil. I let everyone believe I had all types of blood running through my veins when I ruled beside my husband. The king was not fully human. He had a mixture of magus and demon blood. And no one suspected I was one of the hierarchy angels who had fallen. The reason why Victus is powerful and has the ability to compel others.”

I gasped. I stood before one of the hierarchy angels. The fact that she’d fallen explained Victus’s black wings.

She continued, “I was the one who sent the hierarchy angels back and created the Order of Angels, but the OA was disbanded when I died. It will be up to both of you to create order with those still on Earth. The other hierarchy angels will not help for they do not want to intervene with the humans.”

My stomach churned with disgust and I balled my fingers by my side. I didn’t know the OA had been disbanded. But Rafael knew. He knew all along and played us. He took advantage of the situation to bring his plan to life.

Victus caressed my cheek. “I’m also immune to the poison the divine dagger spreads because of my magus blood line. I bit you and sucked the poison out of you. That is how I saved you.”
