“Michael.” Gorgo chuckled and slid my tankard to Asher. “You’ve had enough, and—”

Gorgo stiffened and cursed when a group of demons entered in human form and sat at the table playing cards. Gorgo turned his back toward them, and so did Asher.

They must be Asmodeus’s soldiers. And if I was right, Gorgo and Asher would want to leave. Too many soldiers under one roof made them feel uncomfortable.

“Are you sure?” a demon at the playing card table asked.

“You’re doubting me? I was there.” The baldheaded demon who had entered said to the demons playing cards.

Everyone at the table laughed.

I tugged on Gorgo’s tunic, pulling him closer to me. “Why are they kissing?” I shook my head. Kissing didn’t seem right because their mouths would be pressed together. “Talking? I meant laughing?”

I wasn’t sure if I asked him a question. Oh, skies. I couldn’t think clear. I scrubbed my face and I wanted to take off my shirt. The tavern’s perfect temperature suddenly became too hot.

“Quiet, Michael.” Gorgo placed a finger over my mouth.

The baldheaded soldier’s eye flickered dark as the night. “Asmodeus left the feather bitch, or Eva, whatever you want to call her, to rot. He should have taken her prisoner and drained her blood instead.”

Gorgo cursed under his breath.

“Where?” A deep voice rumbled from the demon shuffling cards. “I’ll claim her and we can share the profit.”

“They were at Mount Clouds,” another soldier said. “But you’re better off going to Mount Skull in Whiten and retrieving the treasure.”

“I heard a drakon is guarding it,” the soldier shuffling cards muttered. “It’ll eat you alive and spit out your bones.”

“You don’t believe in that shit, do you?” a drunken commoner slurred from the bar.

“What’s a drakon?” a female demon from the adjacent table asked.

“It’s a giant creature that looks like a snake with mighty wings. Besides, it’s a myth and a rumor to keep you out of the mountain,” the baldheaded soldier said and drank from the tankard.

The soldier shuffling cards tightened his features. “Some say the drakon is the most powerful hierarchy angel.”

“I heard that and believe it, though I’ve never seen one.”

I hiccupped and burped. “Excusssse ma.”

Gorgo clapped my face and whispered, “I need your help. Come with me. Asher, help me get Michael out the door, now.”

As I waved a hand at the demons, I almost punched Gorgo in the face. “I’ll turn into a drakon and take out all of you. Or maybe I can find one. I’ll capture it and ride it, and then kill everyone.”

“Oh, burning skies.” Gorgo rolled his eyes. “Asher. Now.”

“He drank too much,” Asher announced and let out a nervous chuckle. “Never mind him. His lover rejected him today.”

Two arms gripped me and dragged me out the door. My stomach lurched and I felt the same floating sensation as when I had taken my first flight on newly sprouted wings.

“Weeeeeee.” I made a funny sound. “I’m flying.”

The cool air hit me. No. Someone hit my face. I shook my head, my back against a tree trunk.

“Michael. Get a hold of yourself.” Gorgo snapped his fingers in front of my eyes.

“You is big … giant meanie.” I lowered my bottom lip and dropped my shoulders.

“Listen.” He huffed out a breath. “I need you to open your wings and fly me high to Mount Clouds. I’ll direct you where to go. Got it?”
