“What about me?” Asher asked.

“In his state, he can only carry one. Find our angel friends and tell them I request them to bring my team to the cavern. I need you to keep watch over Michael after I send him back. He’s in no condition to fight.” Gorgo tapped my back. “I hope I’m not too late. Come on, Michael. Release those feathers. We’re going flying.”

I stretched my wings as I poked Gorgo’s forehead. “You, me, go wheeeeee?” I extended my arms out and teetered side to side like the way my wings did in flight. “You have feathers too? I didn’t know.” I stumbled to the side and planted a palm on the tree trunk. “Oh, hi there, tree. You are beautiful, but not as pretty as Simone.”

Gorgo put his arms around my shoulders. “Let’s get flapping together. Ready?”

“You want to kiss? Simone don’t like. Oh, wait. She doesn’t like you. I mean … she doesn’t like me. Wait. Do you like her?” I lowered my voice. “She’s a demon and I’m an angel. But I’m no angel. I touched her. I wanted to do things to her.”

Gorgo let out a long sigh. “I don’t need the details. Sorry for saying this when your heart is broken, but if you fly me to the mountain, Simone will be waiting for you there.”

“She waits? Why you didn’t first say?” I launched to the sky and Gorgo tightened his grip on me.

“Michael!” Gorgo shrieked.

“Not loud. My ears.”

“Damn you. Fly straight, for fuck’s sake.”

He pointed north, or maybe south.

“This way,” Gorgo spat. “No. That way.”

My wings tilted from side to side. The cool night air caressed my face and cleared a little of the haze in my brain. I’d forgotten where I was headed. And why was I holding Gorgo, or was he holding me?

“There.” Gorgo jabbed his finger toward the west. “Over there. Toward the clouds. Do you see the tip of the mountain? Go there.”

I focused, then forgot what Gorgo had said. I spotted a precipice that looked like a good place to rest.

“Slow down, Michael!”

Slow down finally registered and I skidded to a halt, my feet sliding on the dirt. As I stumbled forward, one or both of us let go, and Gorgo fell flat on his ass. He growled and pounded a fist on the ground, then dusted his pants when he stood.

“Why are we here?” One side of my wings tipped downward to my feet, but I grounded myself so I wouldn’t fall.

Gorgo tapped my face. “Thank you. Now, go find Asher. I’ll be down there soon.

I shoved his hands away. “Why you hit my handsome face … so much. Tonight?”

He pointed toward the night sky. “Even when you’re drunk, you’re arrogant. Go. Now.”

“Fine. I’m not your friend.”

“Yes, you are.” He clapped my face again. “If we get split up, find me at the forest in Silorn by Mount Stones. I found out your mother and sister are being held captive there. I’ll help you find them.”

“Mother and sister?” Reality slammed into me like an iron spike. “I need to find them.”

“Yes. Go.”

I neared the edge and plummeted backward with my wings opened wide. I reveled in the serenity enveloping my soul for that brief moment. Steady as the calm sea. So much peace … until my mind flooded with Simone’s face.

Her touch. Her sweet scent. Her soft lips on mine. Then Levia slicing Peter’s neck. So much blood. Mother and sister so scared as the soldiers took them.

My stomach lurched. Oh, no. What the hell was wrong with my … I flipped over in midflight and vomited. Ugh! I was never drinking ale again.
