My blood didn’t heal him, but instead made him stronger or turned him into a wild beast.

The soldiers in front of the councilors held out their weapons, but they didn’t try to stop Thomas. I understood then that those soldiers were to guard their people only.

I feared for my life as I continued to back away and Thomas stomped toward me, eyes blazing with hunger and hatred. The divine sword was the only thing that could end my life, but if this monster clawed me to pieces like he had done to the soldier, there would be no healing.

The crowd’s angry animalistic noise stopped and began to chant. “Kill! Kill! Kill!”

When my back hit the wall, I had no choice but to raise my cuffed hands and unfurl my wings. A warning to back off. Gasps filled the entire stadium the faster I flapped.

A few feet from me, Thomas dropped to the ground on all fours and vomited blood, like spilled black wine. Then he collapsed, face down.

“Chop off her wings!”

“Her wings are her weapon!”

Great. Now they thought my wings had killed Thomas. Idiots. I closed them, but that left me defenseless.

“Grab her!” The same councilor rose and pointed at me.

The soldiers who were guarding the councilors took several steps forward, then halted when the floor trembled like an earthquake. Markane looked at Abacus. Abacus waggled his eyebrows and smirked, his eyes gleaming with amusement. He must have done something to cause the tremor, had planned something malicious especially for me.

I think I found my entertainment. This is going to be so much fun.

I expected the crowd to react with fear and run, but their continuous chanting assured me the floor groaning and splitting in the center wasn’t unusual.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, the surface tilted downward from the middle. I slid toward the open area, skidding as I tried to find purchase with my fingers, but the cuffs got in the way.

It happened so fast that I had no time to open my wings as I plummeted into the darkness with Thomas. His body hit a boulder, then landed by a gate with a loud thump. Inky blood pooled around his body. Dead. Good.

As I spiraled downward, I opened my wings and stayed afloat, ready to soar upward, but a net covered the entire area where I had fallen from. It seemed whoever created this entrapment had ensnared angels before. Whatever waited for me down there had killed many of my kind, no doubt.

I tucked my wings as I made a soft landing. Faces came into view when I tilted my head way back, but even with my perfect vision, I couldn’t discern who was who.

Boulders of various sizes lined around a perimeter half the size of the stadium. On the far back wall, smaller boulders stacked on top of each other like stairs. Torches glinted behind the enormous metal gate on either end of the cavern, and skulls and bones littered the dirt-packed ground.

What sick games they played.

I had never been in a situation where I was the entertainment, but if they wanted a show, I would give them one. Let them witness the power of Seraphim.

“This isn’t a fair fight.” I waved both fists in the air. “At least take off my cuffs.”

My stomach wound had almost healed, but I had half my strength. Something fell from above. I backed away to dodge the object. The thing struck the dirt and stood upward as dust clouded in front of my feet. A spear?

“Use that.” Markane chuckled.

His people joined him in a round of laughter. No matter, I had my wits and battle strategy. A thump hit the ground and something growled so loud and piercing, the sound reverberated up my chest.

Another thump.

More thumps.

The pebbles scattered on the ground rattled from the impact and the crowd above gasped.

Something growled. A shadow danced on the wall, growing as the animal approached the gate. The groan of chain on chain clanked as the gate lifted higher.

I grabbed the spear but the cuffs hindered my movement. I hopped onto a boulder beside me and positioned myself in a defensive stance with my weapon pointed outward.

A hulking figure emerged approximately five times my size, its body stacked with muscle. Its gaze landed on Thomas, and it planted a giant foot upon the vamp’s chest with a sickening squelch.
