More black blood pooled. Then it raised its chin and beat its chest as if to invite accolades from the crowd below, only to snarl in my direction.

The audience cheered and shouted, “Kill her and tear off those wings.”

The beast snapped its jaw as if to say I’m coming for you and I’m going to tear you apart. Hooklike canine teeth curved upward toward its nose, too big for its mouth. He must be an experiment—some unholy hybrid of a demon and vampire.

I swallowed a big lump and pointed a spear in his direction. “Your size doesn’t scare me, but your face does.”

If only drakon creatures existed outside of bedtime stories, or if I could transform into one. I could crush this monster the same way it did Thomas.

The creature growled and shuffled its bare giant feet, clearly understanding the insult I threw at him. It pounced from one boulder to the next. I expanded my wings and soared to the highest boulder by the back gate.

Determined to catch me, the beast leaped. Its fingers gripped the edge of the rock I stood on. Before it could swing itself up, I jabbed the point of my spear into his hand, then the other one, back and forth as it shifted arms trying not to fall. Even with the cuffs hindering me, I sank the spear into his neck.

It made a horrendous sound as it let go. It fell flat and bounced on its back, dust clouds lifting around its form. Before it could get back up, I drifted onto its belly and stabbed one eye and then the other.

The creature roared and I slammed the spear point into the roof of its enormous mouth. I yanked the spear out and cut through its leathery skin down the middle. Inky blood gushed out.

I raised the spear toward the ceiling, black blood dripping, and demanded with a tone of a Seraphim, “I played your game. Now release me.”

“You’re not done, feathered bitch,” Markane shouted. “That was just a teaser. Prepare yourself. Meet my creation. Its name is Big Dick.”

The crowd’s and his laughter echoed in the cavern.

A growl. Feet pounded the earth. This one was louder than the first monster. The chain rattled as the gate went up, and then the beast emerged in full form. This time, the gate was kept opened.

Not only was it three times the size of the one I had killed, this one had wings. White glorious angel wings attached to its back.

Grief struck me first, and then a tide of rage swept through. An angel had died to create this monster.

The creature swung a lazy punch that toppled a boulder that rested on top of another boulder. It tumbled on the ground, breaking into smaller pieces. I hopped over the debris, but its long legs took only a few steps to reach me. Too fast.

I dropped my spear and took flight toward the gate he came out from, wings extending, and the beast did the same. However, it only levitated a few feet off the ground. The weight of him was too much for the small wings.

“So you created a creature in the likeness of you, Markane?” I flew closer to the net but kept my distance. “It has a big belly and tiny dick like yours.”

“Feather bitch, you’re dead.” Markane growled, then he smirked. “Better watch out,” he said with a lighthearted voice.

Something cranked and the net began to fall. It dropped on top of me and I crashed on the rocks. The jagged parts cut through my skin on my legs, and I groaned as pain lanced up my back.

I pushed off but the net held me in place. The creature stomped toward me, and if I didn’t move out of its path it would crush my body.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

The earth shook with its pounding feet. When it was a few steps away from me, I tucked in my wings and curled into a ball. I sucked in a breath as it missed me by a few inches. When it realized its mistake, the monster turned around and came at me again.

I extended my wings and heaved with all my strength as I pushed up with my cuffed hands on the net over me. Then I somersaulted free of the tangled ropes to avoid a swat from the beast’s hand.

The monster moved too slow to catch me as I went underneath him and ran toward the open gate he had come out from just ahead of his ponderous strides.

I passed the gate and came out, but just before, I shoved the handle down, and the gate dropped and pierced through the head and down to its feet. Black liquid spattered and soaked the dirt.

Boos and cheering filled the air. Some took my side but most of them took the monster’s side. With no net to cover the ceiling, I flew up and landed on the edge of the floor, now closing itself back up.

“Your pet is now called No Dick.” I glared at Markane.

I shouldn’t have provoked him. When he pointed at me, five of the soldiers rushed after me with uplifted spears. One of the soldiers held a pipe between his lips. I crouched just in time and the needle hit the stone wall over my head.

The same soldier scowled and blew into the pipe again. I raised the cuffs in front of my neck. The needle bounced off. I had nowhere to go, nowhere to hide. Pushed to the corner, I had become the hopeless prey. I rounded into a ball, my best protection.
