“What kind of physician are you? Were you not informed of what I did?”

Nina gripped my forearm, her gaze piercing mine. “Listen carefully, angel. Your blood cures diseases, mortal and immortal. It does not kill.”

“You’re wrong,” I stressed.

Her fingers uncoiled and rolled down my sleeve. “You cured the first vampire but killed Thomas. Why do you think that is? They both had the same disease.”

“But it’s impossible. How did they contract such a thing?”

She leaned close to my ears and the scent of roses filled my nostrils. “I don’t know how or what it is. All I know is that it makes them crazy. And eventually they become the monsters you had fought, depending on their bloodline. I’m going to tell you something, but you have to keep it between us. If vamps are given demon’s blood, they die shortly after contact and the same goes for the demons with vampire blood. Neither species is aware of this, that I know of.”

“How do you know?”

Nina glanced back at the curtain and her voice grew even softer. “I’ve been experimenting with the blood types. And I’ve noticed that vamps are drawn only to human and angel blood and never demons. So, their instincts must be guiding them.” She waved toward the shelves. “But I knew much from my father. Anyway, I injected Thomas with demon’s blood before they sent him to you so I could buy you time. If they knew without a doubt your blood would not kill them, they would have drained you dry. Do you understand?”

“Why would you help me?” I held her trembling hands in mine.

She shoved her hands inside her pockets. “I’m frightened all the time. I’m so scared someone is going to either kill me or eat me.”

I leaned back into the chair and sighed. “As a physician, are you not protected?”

“I’m under King Victus’s protection, but these beings are monsters. Anyone can fake an accident.” She went back toward a cabinet and took out a large towel and handed it to me. “Please come this way. Kara will come for you soon and I want you to bathe before you go.”

I held out my bound wrists in front of her.

She lowered her gaze at the hematite. “I shouldn’t, but …” She reached inside her pocket and took out a key. “Just for the bath and then I’ll have to put them back on.”

Nina inserted a key into the hole and took off the cuffs and set them on the table with a clank. I sighed with relief as my wounds began to heal.

She pushed a section of a brick wall under the first skeletal wings. That part of the structure opened into a small room.

Torchlight gleamed in four corners and lit candles set on a back table gave enough light. Even though this cave-like room reeked of soil … I sniffed another scent. Roses? Just like Nina.

Countless red rose petals floated on a cemented area that contained water. She must take baths or put on rose oil to counter the human smell.

“Just push through this wall when you’re finished, but please make it fast.” Nina tugged at the door to close, but I grabbed her arm.

“Am I the only angel prisoner?”

I wanted to know just how much she knew. Nina giving me plenty of information so far didn’t mean I should trust her. Humans had way too many flaws.

She lowered her head, then met my eyes. “Yes. That I know of.”

Either she was lying, or she was not aware of Sarah and the other angels.

Nina began to close the brick wall again but stopped. “Oh … there are angels that are locked up on the last level of the most secure dungeon. They’ve been here so long that I had forgotten about them. Don’t forget them when you escape.”

“Escape?” I furrowed my brow.

“I’m going to help you.” Her voice lightened. “I’ve been wandering through tunnels when I had the chance. I might have a way out. And you’re going to take me with you.”

Tunnels. Good.

“Thank you,” I said. “And do not worry. I will never tell anyone what you shared with me.”

“I know.” She nodded. “You can trust angels. They are closest to the humans.”

I wanted to tell her she was wrong, angels had betrayed humans more than she would ever know, but I offered a broad smile instead. And if she had any doubt, she didn’t show it. I didn’t want to take this peaceful moment from her.
