She pulled at the door again, then halted. “One more thing. A female angel was bought yesterday at the demon auction. And at the back table with the lit candles is a dress and a pair of shoes for you.”

Snow? Dawn? “Do you know the name? Or the color of their hair?”

She shook her head and closed the wall shut.

I stripped off my dress and boots and walked down three stone steps. The rose petals sailed across the water on the ripples I made. When I stretched my wings, my plumes nearly touched on either end of the brick walls. The candles flickered and almost went out.

That stretch felt so good. I moaned.

Releasing a long sigh, I tucked my wings back into my spine and dipped under water. I stayed at the bottom, replaying the memories of my team before we were forced apart. The smiles and the laughter we shared as if we were a human family.

My blood heated and a warm sensation coursed through my veins when I recalled Zander’s hands over my body and him inside me, pumping his hips as our pleasure built.

Saving Grace. I blew out bubbles to cool my lust, but the bubbles reminded me of Otis and Tank’s near-death experience. The fiery lust snuffed out. I wished I could stay under water and disappear. No, I wished I could turn back time and fix the situation in our favor.

My body floated on top of the water, and I pushed back my hair as I positioned myself upright. I blinked. A little black mouse under the table stared at me, its nose twitching like it was sniffing the air.

“Hello there, little friend.” I propped my chin on my crossed arms on the stone surface. “You must be a male to stare at me so hard when I’m in my most vulnerable state.”

Animals didn’t run from me. Perhaps they sensed I wouldn’t harm them. Strange, but a white mouse with half its tail scurried from the back somewhere and sat beside the black mouse. They looked at each other as their whiskers twitched.

“Are you trying to tell me something?”

I pushed up and got out, water dripping and my bare feet printing on the soil. When I neared the two, they scrambled to the corner under the torchlight and pushed their way through a hole just big enough for their small bodies. Such an ancient structure, I expected secret tunnels to exist.

I’ve been wandering through tunnels when I had the chance. I might have a way out, Nina had said. Perhaps behind these walls were tunnels. I would tell Nina of my theory when I felt I could trust her.

I let loose my wings and flapped them. Once my body dried from head to toe, I slipped on a dress with gold trim. I contemplated putting on the pair of soft leather shoes, but they weren’t good for kicking a certain vampire king in the crotch.

After I put on my boots, I pushed through the door. I should have stayed in the bathing room longer. Victus sat on the chair I had occupied earlier, legs slightly spread, elbows on the armrest, scrutinizing my body intently with a blank expression. Did he have to look so damn gorgeous sitting there like an asshole?

I had never felt more naked than I did then as his gaze raked me from head to toe.

If you came to assist me in my bath, then you’re too late.” I held my head high and cautiously walked to the table with scalpels and medical tools. Anything sharp would do. “Or if you—”

Victus jolted off the chair and the air stirred around my body. The cold steel of his gaze shut my mouth. The room somehow seemed darker and too small, and I tried not to stare at his chiseled features and that perfect sculpted body. Too bad he was a vampire and I planned to kill him.

“I told Kara to have you cleaned up, not give you a luxurious bath.” He sniffed and frowned. “And make you stink of spring flowers.”

“Why do you care how I smell?” I didn’t want Nina to get in trouble, so I came up with an excuse. “I demanded a bath. I stank of demon and vampire blood, and Nina just simply wiping me down wouldn’t do. So, did you have me clean up only to entertain your savage people or to lock me back into the cage?”

A muscle twitched in his jaw, but he said nothing.

“I also demanded the cuffs be taken off.” I placed out my arms toward him. “Here. You can put them back on me.”

“You’re inside a lair full of vampires. There is no escape for you.” He narrowed his eyes, focusing on my hair, then walked out.

I shoved a syringe with a needle inside my dress pocket just before the two soldiers passed through the curtain and escorted me. I didn’t know what I would do with the syringe, but anything sharp can be a weapon.

Nina had her head lowered, arms down at her sides. She didn’t look up at me when I passed.

The guards escorted me down the long hallway lined with ornate tapestries and paintings, to the far end of the palace. We entered a grand room with a dark wooden dining table, ringed by intricately carved chairs.
