I give him what I hope is a dazzling smile. “I am agreeable to that. I’m glad we met at that house party.”

He tops up both our champagne glasses, then says, “I have a confession to make, last week wasn’t the first time I saw you.”

“Oh?” I quirk a brow, my heart hammering against my ribs. When did he see me? I don’t remember our paths crossing before.

“The first time I laid eyes on you was during Halloween at a club. It was about two years ago.” He reaches across the table and takes my hand. “Which means you must have had a fake I.D. Such a naughty girl,” he says teasingly.

I swallow hard, but my tone is light. “I’ll admit, I’m not always a good girl.”

“I bet.” He shoots me a wolfish grin, his thumb drawing circles on the back of my hand.

I barely feel his touch as my mind reels with his confession. He saw me that night, the night of the… incident that led to the first encounter with my dark knight. That’s what I call the man who intervened and rescued me that Halloween. The alley was so dark, I never saw his face.

Could Connor Bane be the man who saved me? Is he my faceless dark knight who makes an appearance in my naughtiest daydreams?

I open my mouth to ask him a question, when our food arrives. I’m starving but my stomach is so full of butterflies that I can’t imagine trying to eat this salmon salad. Patiently, I wait for the server to leave our table and give us privacy.

“Bon appetit,” Connor says, giving my hand a squeeze before releasing it.

I study him for a moment, allowing him a chance to reveal his secret identity to me. When he doesn’t, I press forward. “Did we also cross paths in Times Square on?—”

My phone chimes, once, twice, three times, drawing my attention. It could be work, or my family.

“I’m sorry, I need to check this.” I fish my phone from my clutch as Connor politely nods. Such a gentleman.

“No worries. My phone is usually blowing up at all hours, so I understand.”

I glance down at my screen, and freeze.

Are you on a fucking date, kisa???

I don’t like his hands on you.

Make an excuse to leave. Right now. Or I swear I’ll end his life.

Fear prickles my skin, followed by a wave of fury. How dare my stalker threaten my date. Did he choose this moment to resurface just to ruin tonight? I hate him.

I swipe out of his messages and text my security detail to give them a heads up. We’re leaving. I can’t risk putting Connor’s life in danger more than I already have.

Anger and fear mix in my gut, causing my hands to shake. I stare at my screen waiting for the go ahead from my bodyguards.

And wait… and wait. Where are they?

“What’s wrong?” Connor’s serious tone brings my attention to him.

“I-I’m sorry, but I need to leave. Right now.”

His brow pinches. “What’s wrong? Did something happen?”

I shake my head. “I can’t— I shouldn’t—” I blow out a heavy breath. “Something has come up and my security team isn’t responding. I can’t leave without them.”

“Is it something I said, or did?” He sounds genuinely concerned.
