“Try it and find out what I do to brats.”

I could have drowned in her as she laughed and looped both arms around my neck, bringing us closer. “I really do hate that I’m leaving.”

“So maybe you should stay.” The words were out of me before I could reel them back in. I knew it was what I wanted.

I had no idea I’d just blurt it out like that.

Her face flickered with hope, uncertainty, and something else I couldn’t place.

“Just for a little while, at least. A week, maybe.”

She didn’t answer. A piece of me died inside.

“Or not. Just an idea.”

“What about Cass?” she asked.

I shrugged. “She’ll be on her honeymoon. What she doesn’t know won’t kill her. Anyway, it’s fine. Like I said, just an idea.”

“No, it’s not that, I just . . . let me think about it.”

“Sure,” I said with a liar’s smile. “You need a drink.”

“Oh, I can get it?—”

“Nah, let me. Besides, if you leave me here alone, I might end up getting molested by a cousin. Despite what you might have heard, it’s not really a thing we encourage around here. Gin?”

“Yes, please,” she said on another laugh, sounding relieved. I kissed her cheek and left her on the dance floor, doing my best not to panic as I made my way to the bar.

Something had happened in the time since I’d dropped her off at her mom’s, but I didn’t suspect she’d tell me what. Call it a hunch. But if I’d asked her to stay yesterday when we were wrapped up in each other’s arms in my bed, I thought she might have said yes. Maybe she’d have laughed it off, but she wouldn’t have frozen like that.

I ordered her drink, cursing myself. This was only supposed to be a fling. Just a couple weeks of fun. Just a game we were playing to kill time. But then she went and knocked the dust off my heart and shocked it back to life when I thought it was long dead.

And now, here I was, wanting a girl I couldn’t have.

Needing a girl I shouldn’t want.

Losing a girl who wasn’t mine.

I raked a hand through my hair, forgetting about the dick headband, catching it in my fist. I slapped it onto the counter, my jaw clenching so tight my teeth squeaked. And I thought real hard about her leaving and never coming back, and just how bad I’d fucked up.

But most of all, I thought about what the fuck I was going to do about it.

I barely registered her drink being set in front of me, but picked it up and turned in her direction, desperate for answers, hoping to find them in her eyes.

But instead, I found her in Henry’s arms.

100% nope.

JESSA

Remy stopped dead at the sight of me with Henry, his headband clenched in his giant fist and my drink in the other.

Henry was talking. I didn’t hear what he was saying. All I could hear was my thundering heartbeat, 50 Cent booming, and my heart telling me to run. Cass watched Henry and me like it was her birthday 50 was rapping about. Remy watched us like he was going to bust the glass in his hand, imagining it was Henry’s neck.

“Do you know what I mean, Bits?” Henry asked, frowning down at me. “Did you hear what I said?”
