“I . . . erm . . .”

He laughed off my inattentiveness. “That’s one of the many things I love about you—you’re a bit mad.”

I laughed awkwardly.

“I was saying,” he started, holding me close, hips swaying against mine, “that I’ve realized a lot since being here. I can’t pretend that seeing you with that buffoon didn’t jog something in me. But it did. I love you, Bits. Always have, always will. So what do you say? Will you give me a chance?”

I blinked up at Henry. The words were all wrong. The man was all wrong. “A chance at what?”

Again, he laughed, pressing a kiss to my temple. “A chance at us.”

Of all the things I expected when Henry finally confessed his feelings, horror was not one. “Whatever do you mean?” I asked, wondering if perhaps I played dumb, he’d let it go.

I couldn’t be so lucky.

“Tomorrow is the rehearsal dinner. Let me take you. Be my date. Let me prove to you that my feelings are true. I know it’s taken me a long time to finally realize that it’s you—it’s always been you. But I’ll make it right, if you’ll give me a chance.”

I shook my head to clear it. “Why now? After all this time? You’ve seen me date men before—this can’t all be about Remy.”

Henry’s face darkened. “Can’t it be? I’ve never seen you like you are with him. It...it makes me insane, Jessa. I can’t stand it.”

“What about Annie?”

“What about her? She’s just a friend.”

“Then why did you bring her as your date?”

“I never said she was my date. I never said we were together. You assumed.”

“Because you were practically snogging her in front of all of us, Henry! Don’t be dim.”

He looked genuinely confused. “I don’t know what you mean. We’ve always been like that.”

“You’re just like this with everyone then?”

“Bits, you’re acting strange.”

“You may not think she’s your date, but I get the sense she does.”

I nodded toward Annie, who was storming toward us. I backed away just in time for her to slap him squarely across the face.

“That’s it,” she shouted, her face pink and scrunched. “All you’ve done since I got here is talk about her. All you do when she’s around is talk to her. I’m so fucking stupid—I didn’t realize you were in love with her all this time. Well, good fucking luck. I’m out.”

She turned on her heel, shoving people out of her way as she charged toward the door and exited the building.

Henry stared after her, stunned.

“You really didn’t realize she was hopeful for you?” I asked him.

He shook his head.

“Well, now I suppose I really need a date,” he said.

Cass appeared at my elbow. “You can take Jessa.”

“Now wait a minute?—”

“But what about Remy?” he asked.
