I glanced at Cass and Davis. “Really?”

“Go! But wait!” He pulled me into his chest and squeezed. “Thank you, Bits. For everything. I love you, you know.”

I wrapped my arms around his waist and breathed him in one last time. “I love you too, Bobs.”

And then I took off in the direction of Main Street, reaching blindly into my handbag for my phone.

“Jessa!” Cass screeched. “Where are you going?”

“I’ll tell you later!” I shouted over my shoulder.

“Tell me now!” She started after me.

“I’ve got to find Remy!”

“Why do you have to find Remy, Jessa?”

“Because I might be in love with him!”

At that, she took off running in my direction, but Henry caught her and held onto her. I would have felt bad sticking Henry with the task of explaining, but he owed me.

I took off my shoes and ran to The Horseshoe, texting Remy and praying I didn’t trip, but he wasn’t at the bar and I didn’t see his truck anywhere on Main Street. I paused, panting, scanning the street as I tried to sort out what to do. It wasn’t as if Roseville had Uber. I texted Remy again. Still nothing. Called—went straight to voicemail.

“Damn!” I hissed, stomping a foot.

“Uh, you okay?”

I turned to find Shelby, one of the softball coaches, eyeing me.

“Oh, thank goodness. Could I beg you for a ride somewhere?”

“Of course,” she answered. “Where to?”

“Would you take me to Remy’s?”

One of her brows rose.

“I swear, I’ll answer any question you have on the way.”

Now both brows were up. “Anything at all?”

“Anything you want.”

“Well, what are you waiting for? Hop in.” She was already heading for her truck.

“Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you,” I said as I trotted to the passenger side and climbed in.

In the few minutes it took to get to the cottage, Shelby was able to ask a startling number of questions, none of them appropriate and all of them amusing. It seemed Remy was a man of mystery to most, but I had every answer. And I discovered I’d come to know him much better than I thought. A comforting realization, considering I was practically about to move in with him.

My heart was in my throat as we pulled into the drive, but when we rounded the bend to the clearing, my heart slid into my lap.

His Scout wasn’t there.

I bit my bottom lip so I wouldn’t cry, not even knowing why I was about to cry. Only that I was desperate to see him and he wasn’t here, and that was the absolute worst.

Shelby glanced at me. “Want me to take you back to Cass’s?”

“No, that’s all right. I’m sure he’ll be back any time now. Or maybe he’ll answer his phone. Hopefully.”
