“No idea. Come on—we’d better get back in there. Didn’t know I’d be playing bouncer today, did you?”

He looked pensive, hands in his pockets. “I hoped not, at least.”

Before I had a chance to ask what the hell that meant, we were back inside. Davis was tending to Henry. Cass was watching them from the doorway, but turned in a whoosh of skirts and disappeared into the suite. Jessa and Jenny followed, and I picked up my pace, walking in behind them and closing the door behind me.

Cass sank into a chair and reached blindly for the bottle of whiskey. Her face was all puffy and red, and she couldn’t breathe through her nose.

Aunt Jenny knelt in front of Cass, smoothing her hair. “What do you want to do, baby?”

“I wanna go home.” She sounded like a little girl.

“Okay. We can do that.”

Jessa moved for her bags. “I’ll come with you.”

“No,” Cass said.

Jessa’s brows clicked together. “Are you sure? We can talk.”

“I’m sure. I love you. I don’t wanna talk—I just want my mama.”

Jessa swallowed back tears and nodded, helping Jenny get Cass up and free of the chair.

“I’ll take care of everything—we’ll drop off your things later,” Jessa said. “Okay?”

Cass nodded, shuffling toward the door. I walked over to Jenny.

“What can I do?”

She offered a sad smile. “I’ll text you. For now, just help Jessa get everything together here. I’ve got her.”

“Okay. Let me at least escort y’all out. Who knows what the f—heck is gonna get in the way next.”

The good news was that nothing else got in the way. When we passed Davis, he made a move like he was going to try and talk to Cass, but I shot him a warning glance and shook my head.

Once they were pulling out of the parking lot, I headed back inside, finding the place almost empty. Henry and Davis were off to God knows where. Cass’s honeymoon, maybe.

I decided to keep the suspicion to myself indefinitely.

My headache from this morning was back, or maybe it was a new one. All I knew was that I was ready to be done with this and home where it was quiet and no one was bleeding.

The cousins, Jessa, and I cleaned up the bridal suite and got all Cass’s things together, finally heading out of the cursed room for good.

Only to find Grace waiting for us in the hallway.

The sigh I sighed came all the way from my fucking toes.

Jessa tipped her chin up bravely and approached her mother. “Mother, I’m not going home with you. Now, please don’t?—”

“I know.”

Jessa stared at her. “You know . . . what?”

“That you’re not coming home, although I’ve no idea what I’ll tell your father.”

Jessa and I wore matching expressions of confusion.

“I don’t understand,” Jessa said slowly.
