“It’s quite simple, really. You have found what seems to be a perfect man, his only fallibility is his station. Did he tell you we spoke last night?”

Jessa glanced at me. “No.”

“I offered him carte blanche to end things. Would you like to know what he said?” When Jessa didn’t answer right away, Grace’s lips curled into the smallest smile. “There aren’t enough zeros.”

Jessa looked up at me with soft eyes and stepped to put herself in my side. I opened my arm and tucked her in.

“I must admit, I expected a different answer,” Grace continued. “I couldn’t say the man I once loved would have done the same. I’m not even certain your father would. Remington, you said that she was going to make her own choices now, and I...I hope she does. I was never afforded the chance. I assume you’ll take immaculate care of her?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Excellent. Well, darling, I must be off. The jet can leave tonight, and after all of...this, I’m eager to be home.”

“All right,” Jessa answered, shocked sheepish.

She glanced at Henry, and a strange expression washed across her face. “Well, they do say never to put all your eggs in one basket. His father is going to be furious.”

“You’re not going to tell them, are you Mother?”

Grace laughed, a pretty, tinkling sound, waving her hand with a pair of gloves hanging out of her fist.

“Absolutely not. I only hope he’ll be happy. It’s more than most of us can get.”

Her smile was sad, but she didn’t hesitate to kiss her daughter on both cheeks and shake my hand before she clipped off toward her car, the feather in her hat bouncing.

Jessa leaned into me. “Well, I never.”

“Me neither.”

She sighed, smiling up at me. “Now can we go home?”

I leaned in for her lips. “Absofuckinglutely,” I said before I kissed her and kept my promise.

It was dark by the time we got home.

When we dropped Cass’s things off, we hadn’t bothered to knock on Cass’s door, just left them on the porch and texted Jenny so we didn’t disturb them. Then we swung by Sonic for food, since we were starving to death—our tots and patty melts were gone by the time we pulled into the driveway.

My feet ached as I passed the threshold. Beau trotted into the living room—I petted him while Remy closed the door. While I was down there, I unfastened my shoes and stepped out of them with Beau licking my face.

“Ahh,” I said when my feet flattened on the cool wood floors. “That’s wonderful. It’s good to be home.”

Remy chuckled, stepping behind me to wind his arms around my waist. I leaned back and sighed, covering his hands with mine.

“Home,” he echoed. “I like that.”

“As do I. What should we do now?” I asked.

“Fuck?”

“After that. Tomorrow. The next day.”

“Fuck.” His low laughter sent a little chill through me.
