“I think we’re going to go home, but thanks,” Cass answered, all of a sudden looking at me like I was trouble.

“You too, Duchess?”

She opened her mouth to speak, first looking at Cass, then at me, then back at Cass. On reading her expression, she said, “Yes, thank you.”

“Good. I’ll drive you.”

Cass huffed, pissed she’d gotten caught in the trap. “Aren’t you going out?”

“You know, it was a rough game. I think I’ll hit the hay.”

“You’re impossible. We’ll take her.”

“Why? That doesn’t make any sense and you know it. I’m going there. She’s going there. It’s on the other side of town from your mama’s.”

“The town has a radius of four miles,” Cass said, her face flat.

I shrugged. “Still. Save the turtles, or whatever.” With a brow arched, I looked to Jessa. “How about we let Duchess speak for herself.”

Something warred on her face as she adjusted her carnival prize, stalling. “I...erm...” Her gaze flicked to Cass, who looked worried. Jessa straightened up, smiling. “It’s fine. He’s harmless.”

My cousin narrowed her eyes at me, leaning in to kiss Jessa’s cheek. “He fucking better be. Can I talk to you for a second before we go, Remington?”

“Sure, Cassidy,” I answered as she grabbed me by the arm and pulled me aside.

“What are you doing?” she asked. She didn’t spit it or snap it, she just asked with her eyebrows together like she was worried.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“Stop it, Remy. I’m not dumb. You like her.”

I shrugged. “She’s likable.”

“But she’s not for you.”

“And how come?”

“Because she’s always been in love with somebody else.”

“Who, Hank?” I scoffed. “Please. He barely knows she exists, the fucking idiot.”

“That’s not my point. She is emotionally unavailable. And you have a tendency to break women’s hearts. She is my very best friend in the whole world, Remy, and I am asking you to please, please quit it. Because if the two of you ended up tangled up in something, one of you is going to get hurt. Or both of you. So just … keep it in your pants. Please?”

She looked so worried, I pulled her into my chest for a hug, wishing I could promise her with certainty that I’d never so much as think about Jessa again.

“I love you, Squirt. Quit worrying so much.”

She sighed. “I love you too, and I can’t help it.”

“Jessa’s safe with me, remember?”

Another sigh. “Yeah.”

“Good.” I kissed the top of her head and let her go. “Now get back over to your man and let’s get out of here.”

“Hey—you really were great tonight. I’m sorry I’ve been on your case,” she said, picking at her thumbnail.

“Cass, if I know one thing, it’s that I have it comin’.”
