With her laughter, I’d been forgiven.

But all it took was one look at Jessa, and I instantly knew.

Cass shouldn’t have let me off so easy.

Satisfaction washed over me as Jessa said goodbye—until she got to Henry. That stupid fucker looked down at her like she hung the moon, pulling her in for a hug.

“See you tomorrow, Bits.” He kissed the top of her head, and hot fury ripped through my chest. But I kept still, kept my face locked in the DGAF position.

“Night, Bobs,” she said all flushed and breathy.

I almost picked her skinny ass up and threw her over my shoulder right then and there.

Cass hugged me, but pinned me with a look of warning.

Only the way I read it was that Jessa and Henry weren’t so sure of a thing, or she wouldn’t be worried about me.

I tucked that knowledge in my pocket right next to her panties.

The girls kissed cheeks and had a whisper conversation that ended with Jessa laughing too hard at what I assumed to be a joke at my expense. And with that, we parted ways.

“Lemme get that for you,” I said, taking the toy from her. I held it out in front of me, making a face at its wonky eyeballs as we walked toward my Scout. “I don’t know what the hell you call this thing.”

“I was thinking of calling him Merlin.”

“Because he has a face not even a wizard can fix?”

She laughed. My chest filled up.

“Do you have a better idea?”

“Hmm.” I inspected him. “Kinda looks like a Bocephus to me.”

That earned me a full on cackle. “That cannot be a name.”

“In Tennessee it can. Never was there a name so hillbilly.” I slung Bocephus over my shoulder by one of his legs. “It was Hank Williams Jr.’s nickname from his daddy. But I think it fits. Don’t you?”

“It’s perfectly ridiculous. Suits him.”

“I’m over here.” I nodded to the Scout.

We walked for a minute in silence. I wondered why I couldn’t think of anything to say.

“Did you know that was my first baseball game?” she finally said.

“How’d you like it?”

“Surprisingly, quite a lot. The ending was wild. I’ve never felt that sort of excitement before.”

“Not a sports fan, huh?”

“Not purposely. Just never had a reason to go before.”
