“Not if you or Evander get a say. Remember Silvio isn’t my biggest fan. I could contact Hell, but that’s the long way round. I don’t think we have time for that.”

“What do you do if you have a problem?”

“Bring it to you.”

“Thought you understood that when you said it before. I am your first call and your last.”

“I want to know who killed my grandfather, but not at the expense of other lives. Strat’s important to me.”

“He’ll be taken care of.”

“If I pit you against another family, you could get hurt.”

“You didn’t care when Vex found out we’re together.”

“Because Vex is a bug, an annoying gnat. Being with you liberates me from him. You can handle Vex.”

“I can’t handle the don?”

“Evander doesn’t have Silvio’s reach. Silvio plays by the rules.” Most of the time. “But Swerve—I’d never forgive myself.”

His rough, entitled fingers pushed vertically up her face, curving around into her hair to bring their eyes closer.

“Put another obstacle in front of me, I’ll obliterate it. Trust me, Macushla.”

“I need help.” Breathing out the words was a relief. “I don’t know what to do with Marseille. I want her safe. She’s looking to me, and I’ve got nothing.”

“Ask.”

“Help me.”

“It’s handled,” he said, softening, curling and straightening his fingers against her scalp. “No limits. There’s no limit to what I’d do for you.”

“Just remember you’re my last line of defense. Without you, I’m vulnerable.”

He didn’t care about his life whereas she did. A guaranteed way to ensure he took more care of himself was to highlight what losing him would mean for her safety.

“That’ll never happen.”

With his hands looser, she could lean over to snag her purse without losing contact. “The keys…”

She put them on the bar by her phone.

“You never have to think about it again. It’s dealt with.”

And that was a weight off. He’d told her he’d protect Strat too and she believed him.

“Thank you, baby.”

“You’re not gonna do this again. I don’t care what shit you’re into, you talk to me. There’s no line I wouldn’t cross for you.”

“I want you to be proud of me,” she said, accepting the simplicity of her need, “not to bring shame or drama to the family.”

“What is your job?”

“To support you.”

“Trust me.”
