“From the first moment you touched me, all I wanted was to belong to you. To be yours.”

“You are mine.”

And if something happened to her, Conn’s position would be stronger with more information.

“Tulip,” she said. “At The Chronicler. She called to tell me Wanstead got your name from a CI. A long standing CI who turned up flush around the same time. She doesn’t know if the two are related.”

“It was a setup.”

On an exhale, she nodded within his hold. “That would be my guess. Wanstead wanted you in the interrogation room.”

“Someone did. Why?” he asked, narrowing his gaze, like maybe he wasn’t really asking.

Maybe he wasn’t.

“Do you have history with Wanstead? He’s a jerk.”

“Plenty of that going around,” he muttered. “Wanstead’s background noise.”

“If you have no personal beef, he’s in someone’s pocket.”

“In debt or looking for a favor.” He snapped back to focus on her. “What’s the CI’s name?”

“She wouldn’t tell me. Not until I scratched.” His frown prompted an answer. “She’ll scratch our back if we scratch hers. She wants to know why Nicole has a price on her head. Asked for an interview.”

“With who?”

“Me, you, Nicki, I don’t know, she wants answers.”

“We’ll take care of her.”

“Nicely,” she said, moving against him. “The Chronicler are our allies until they’re not. And I don’t want to lose my job.”

“Your job is safe, baby.”

Because he’d make sure of that. “Having Tulip on our side could work out for us in the long run.”

“You want me to play nice.”

“I would never dream of telling you how to do your job.” Her smile brought him lower. “Mine will be easier if we don’t intimidate my colleagues.”

“Wanstead’s handler set me up.”

And she didn’t forget that for a second. “There’s a silver lining,” she said. “A clue. Whoever it is, they didn’t know about us.”

“You suspected our people?”

“Vex knew about us. So if it’s a Manzani play, at least we can rule out one suspect. Him and his people.”

“Never thought it was him, he’s too simple.”

Funny, she’d said something similar about Vex in another scenario. “I haven’t heard from him in a while, makes me nervous.”

“Nothing to be nervous about in our kingdom.”

“You still working with him?”

“Using him for what I need. He’s not my equal.”
