“Wow, this looks incredible,” I say, forcing a lightness into my tone that I don’t feel.

“This is a blackcurrant and strawberry mousse with passion fruit drizzle and white chocolate flakes,” the waitress explains, grinning at Toby when he picks up the spoon and dives right in.

“YUM!” he exclaims, smacking his lips. “THIS IS THE BEST!”

The waitress smiles. “I’ll be sure to pass on your compliments to the chef.”

“Make sure he knows that now my Mama’s gonna work here, he’ll have to make sure his puddings are way bigger.”

“Toby!” I exclaim. What’s that saying? Out of the mouth of babes?

But when Drix, Daisy and the waitresses burst out laughing, I can’t help but join in.

“What’s so funny?” Dalton asks, stepping up to the table as the waitresses leave. His gaze falls to their retreating backs, or should I say arses.

“Really?” Daisy mutters, noticing too.

“Did you enjoy your meal?” Dalton asks, ignoring her.

“It was delicious, thank you,” I reply, keeping things polite given he’s my new boss.

Dalton nods. “And you met the staff you’ll be working with, Lia?”

“I did. They were very welcoming.”

“Good. Well, I better head off, I’ve got work to do.”

Daisy snorts. “Like getting handcuffed to a bed by one of your… lady friends, you mean?”

Dalton blanches, cutting a glare to Drix.

“It just slipped out,” Drix says, smothering a smile.

Dalton lifts a brow. “See you tomorrow then?” he says, looking at me then Daisy.

She lifts her eyes to meet his. “Not if I can help it.”

“Daisy,” Drix mutters, and she just shrugs. “Thanks Dalton, I’ll give you a call later?” he adds.

“Sure thing. Goodnight,” he replies, before twisting on his heel and striding off.

Toby screws up his face. “You were rude to that man,” he points out.

Daisy gives him a rueful smile. “It’s no more than he deserves.”

By the time we get home an hour later, Toby is fast asleep. Rather than wake him up to get washed and ready for bed, I simply carry him into our bedroom, remove his coat and shoes, and tuck him into bed.

As I head downstairs, I hear Daisy and Drix moving about in the kitchen, and I mentally prepare myself for the conversation to come. I owe them my complete honesty, and that’s what I’m going to give them.

“Has he gone down alright?” Drix asks me as I approach. He’s sitting at the kitchen island drinking black coffee whilst Daisy leans against one of the cabinets taking a sip from a glass of water.

“He’s out cold,” I reply softly, looking between the two. “About what Toby said–”

“You don’t need to explain yourself to us,” Drix interrupts.

I shake my head. “I want to. You’ve been so kind, and I don’t want you to think I’m keeping secrets, because I’m not.”

“So you are married then?” Daisy asks, giving Drix a concerned look.
