Michael looked thoughtful.“He would have been Chris’s second in their pack when Jake retired.Even before Chris went off the deep end, he was pretty aggressive, but Brett was more like Jake—even-tempered and fair. But,” he saidwith a shrug, “it sounds like the male I knew two decades ago haschanged a lot so I doubt that anything I knew about him stillstands.”

“She’s pretty torn up aboutit, and I totally understand, I just hate to see hersad.”

“I want to believe thatBrett will come around, but alpha’s can be stubborn. Just ask mybrother.”

Kash chuckled. He reached into theguard station and popped the button to lift the wooden arm.“Thanks.”

“Safe travels to the FaeRealm, and good luck with everything. It’s a good thing to findyour truemate, no matter the other issues happening.”

Kash nodded and steppedback into the station as Michael pulled past the lifted arm. As itlowered back into place, Kash’s phone rang.

“Hi honey,” his momsaid.

“Hi, what’s up?”

“I was wondering if youcould stop by the house before you go to the realm tonight. Ipicked up some of the gourmet chocolate and candy covered pretzelsmy dad likes for his birthday and wanted you to give them tohim.”

“Yeah, sure. I’m going tolunch in about twenty minutes, are you home? I can swing bythen.”

“That’s perfect. You’restaying for three days, right?”

“Yes, we’ll come homeSaturday.”

“Good, that’s what I toldyour grandma, but I wanted to double check. She stocked the housefor you.”

“That’s really sweet,thanks.”

“Well, it’s very romanticto go to the Fae Realm, but it’s not romantic to have to go to themarket right away.”

He grinned. “I supposenot. We’re having dinner with them tomorrow night for Grandpa’sbirthday, and then we were invited to a show by Jovan and his newmate Arely.” Jovan was the son of his mom’s best friend Kari. Kashhad grown up with Jovan and the two were good friends. Whenever hewent into the Fae Realm they usually grabbed a drink out somewhereto catch up.

“Sounds good. See you in abit.”

Kash ended the call and sat at thedesk, checking the monitors. He saw Rick, a fellow guard, onpatrol, but otherwise everything looked normal.

By the time Rick made it back to theguard station, Kash was ready to leave.

“I’ll be back in thirty,”Kash said. “Can I grab you anything?”

“Where are you stopping?”he asked, easing into the desk chair.

“At my mom’s to pick upsomething to take on the trip, and then to Lonestar to grab one oftheir to-go lunches.”

“Oooh, okay, grab me onetoo.” He reached into his back pocket and pulled a ten out of hiswallet.

“You got it. Roastbeef?”

“Unless they have one oftheir pulled pork sandwiches.”

“See you in afew.”

Kash headed out to histruck and left. His parents’ home was on the other side of town, ina quiet neighborhood. His mom had a business making homemade soapsand lotions out of a small building behind the house. His dad waspart of the pack’s security team, and he also helped out as abouncer at Jake’s, if the managers Tina and Peter wereshort-staffed.

He slowed as a woman ran into the roadand waved her arms wildly. Braking fully, he rolled his window downto hear what she was shouting more clearly.

“Please, help! It’s my son,he’s hurt!”

“Did you call 911?” heasked, reaching for his phone.
