“We have your mate,” amale voice said. “You will come to Rhone and meet with the alpha athis home. You will declare you have no truemate and take whateverpunishment the alpha has decided for your betrayal. You have twohours to return to town. If you do not show up, Kash will be killedwithout mercy. Two hours.”

There was a brief pause and the callended. Bella’s knees went out and London grabbed her, the phonecrashing to the concrete as her vision went blurry from tears andshe felt like she couldn’t breathe.

“He’s in Rhone,” Jennasaid, her voice taking on an ethereal quality. She looked up fromwhere she was crouched in the parking lot with a large map spreadout, a piece of Kash’s clothing, and the wax from a melted bluecandle pooled around the name of her hometown.

Logan put his hand on Bella’sshoulder. “I won’t ask you to stay behind because I know you won’t.But you’ll stay with our people so we can keep yousafe.”

“I will,” she said, straightening her shoulders.

Jenna crumpled the map andstood. She came over and hugged Bella tightly. She could feel heranguish, because it mirrored her own. They didn’t need to sayanything to each other, because they both wanted the same thing:Kash home safe.

“London, go to the alpha’shouse and stand guard, check in with Michael, he’s already on theway,” Jason said.

“Kick ass, sis,” Londonsaid.

Bella looked at Logan and Jason.“Let’s go.”

Her mate needed her and she wasn’tgoing to let him down.

A feeling rose inside her, just briefly, as she climbed into Logan’s SUV. She paused andfocused on the fleeting thought.

Don’t come.

She rubbed the space over her heart.“We should go. Now.”

“Did you feel something?”Logan asked.

She sat down and pulled the door shut.Jason and Logan were in the front seats, Logan behind thewheel.

“Yes. Kash told me not tocome.”

“Then he’s in danger,”Jason said. “I think you both are.”

Chapter Sixteen

Chris was in over his damnhead.

When he’d followed hisfriends out of the barn, leaving Kash bound in iron that wasclearly harming him physically, he’d told them he didn’t wantanyone to die. They’d been condescending to him, promising it wassimply a threat and no one was going to die. But a knot in his guttold him that at the very least they planned to kill Kash, orsimply let whatever the hell the iron was doing finish thejob.

They’d made vague promises ofreuniting the alpha family and how things would be all right onceBella was back in Rhone, but Chris was beginning to believe thatnothing was going to be all right.

He’d parted ways with themales in town, then stole back to the barn.

He knew the smart thing to do was togo to his dad and confess what he’d done and ask for help, but hewas more worried about Kash. The iron shackles seemed to bepoisoning him.

The plan was to get Kash free, thentake him to his dad’s for help. His dad could call the pack healerto the house and help Kash.

He didn’t relish tellinghis dad what he’d done in the name of trying to keep the familytogether against his willful sister’s shenanigans, but he’d takewhatever punishment his dad wanted to mete out.

After ensuring the coast was clear,Chris pulled one of the rotted boards loose in the back of the barnand wiggled inside. He didn’t want to mess with the lock on thefront doors in case anyone happened by.

Hustling to the access panel cut intothe floor, Chris hefted it open and peered down into the cellar. Itwas dark but light filtered through the old floorboards and hecould see Kash lying on the dirt.

“Kash?”

The male didn’t stir.

Shit.
