“Please, Uncle Onyx?” Dallas’ soft, scared voice dragged me from my rage-induced trance.

“You’re fucking lucky you’re going to be able to walk away from this bar tonight,” I growled before I spat on him.

With one last glare, I stood and walked over to where Pike was standing with Dallas. I scooped her into my arms and jogged up the stairs, setting her on her feet in front of the door to my office. Still rattled, but deep in protector mode, I pressed her between my body and the door before fishing around for my keys. She was trembling and I didn’t want her out of my sight.

“Are you okay, Dallas?”

“I’m worried about Emily. He hit her really hard.”

He’d hit her? I should have killed him. I finally got the door open and ushered Dallas inside.

“Can you call the police, baby?” I asked, tossing her my cell. I was sure someone else already had, but maybe multiple calls would get them here faster.

“W-will you get in trouble?” Dallas stuttered, her face a mask of worry.

“No, darlin.”

“Are you sure?”

“I promise, Dallas. I’ll be fine.” I didn’t know for sure that I wouldn’t be charged for assault or something, but since my brother, Locken, was on the force, I was thinking things would work in my favor.

“Yes, Sir.” She unlocked my phone and dialed the number.

I opened my bathroom door and was surprised to see Emily wasn’t in there. My office was rather small and that’s where I’d assumed she would be.

“Emily?” I called, panic rising in my chest for no reason other than the adrenaline still coursing through my veins. I knew she was here because my door had been locked. “Emily? Baby, where are you?”

I looked behind the couch.

“Emily, sweetheart, it’s just Onyx. You’re safe. Dallas is here too.” I looked behind the coats that I never took home and behind the curtains. Where was she? Pausing, I held my breath and listened until I heard it.

A pitiful sob coming from my desk. Coming from underneath it, to be exact. I should have looked there first. Where else would a Little girl hide?

I tiptoed across the room, and crouched to peer underneath. Just as I’d known she would be, Emily was wedged into the space under my desk. Her knees were pressed into her chest and she was clutching a pair of scissors. My heart twisted at the fear on her face.

“Hey, darlin’. It’s just me. Can you come out so I can check on you?” I sat down on my ass, hoping it would make me look less intimidating.

Emily

“Hey, darlin. It’s just me. Can you come out so I can check on you?” Onyx asked, sitting down on the floor.

I shook my head.

“Please, princess? I promise I won’t let him hurt you anymore.”

He couldn’t promise that. He didn’t know Malachi like I did.

“You’re okay, Emily. The police are almost here. That man is all the way downstairs. You’re safe now,” Dallas whispered, plopping down in Onyx’s lap. Her voice was thick with emotion too and I felt guilty for exposing her to all of this.

Like Onyx’s words the night of the sleepover, hers were genuine, but untrue. I would never be safe. Malachi and his followers were never going to leave me alone. They wouldn’t rest until I was back where they thought I belonged. At that hopeless truth, I rested my head on my knees and cried. I was so tired of being scared all the time.

“Come out, sweet girl, let me hold you,” Onyx coaxed.

I shook my head and held the scissors tighter. I would take my own life before I let him drag me back to the compound.

“Emily, baby. Please let me see you. I know that bastard hit you. Are you hurt?” Onyx asked. He sounded emotional too.
