If I’m going to be up late reading, I might as well go all in.

I find a comfy couch and sit next to the fireplace. Because the furniture is made for much larger people than me, I’m able to snuggle up really well in the armchair. With a blanket around me, I feel as snuggled as can be. I run my fingers over it and wonder what Torben’s snow beast form would feel like.

Tor comes out with a serving tray with a teapot, cup, and a little saucer of sweets.

“I prefer my tea as is. These little candies are popular to suck on as you drink the tea.”

“I’m always eager to try something new.” The shaped candy reminds me of some I’ve seen in tea ceremonies in Japan. I pop one in my mouth, letting it melt while gingerly sipping at the tea.

It’s steamy but not overly hot and I find myself drinking it down. I can taste hints of peppermint in it and something that reminds me of lemon balm. “Does it have honey in it?”

He shakes his head. “No other additives aside from the leaves themselves.”

“Well you win. I’m not a big fan of tea, but I’m a fan of whatever this is.”

Smile broke out on his face. “It’s not winning yet.”

He gets up and he takes the tray away, busying himself in the other room. I don’t know exactly what he means by that, but I happily finish my tea and set my cup on the end table.

I open the first page of the book getting ready to see what the detective is facing for this round. I stretch out and yawn and close my eyes.

Chapter Nine

HER VILLAIN

Torben

I call the experiment, a success.

Not only did she like the taste, but she also fell promptly asleep in less than five minutes.

I will take into account that she has had an adventurous day, but even in her words, she does not tend to sleep well in new surroundings.

I try not to look into a deeper meeting than that. I shall just take her as she comes.

I take the book from her lap and lay it on the end table. A quick skim shows that it is yet another story involving law enforcement people this story does not seem as lighthearted as the shows she shares with me, but I sense a trend.

Perhaps she likes action takers such as these. Males like Vane who are guardians.

I once was one of those. Now I’m just a killer in wait. The villain in these types of stories.

One more comfortable hiding in shadows than walking in the light.

Her phone lights up again. She had been trying to hide it because her phone is attached to her watch.

I don’t intend to snoop into her private belongings however, the messages on them seem peculiar.

Perhaps there is some thing I have done when I installed the makeshift chip into her phone.

Jack mentioned that she would have her own phone delivered today. I will make sure that she has some thing better equipped until then.

I tap into my computer interface and pull up her phone. I studiously ignore everything else that’s in it and focus on the electronics. There seems to be a block on certain things, and when I poke through to see what might be blocked behind a security feature, a whole slew of angry messages riddled with hate pile up.

I feel the shift.

Among the useless messages, several other sources, ranging from pleading tones to threats of violence had been delivered to Val. Who would say such things especially to a woman? They are so much smaller. Weaker.

They need to be protected and cherished.
