It takes several deep breaths for me to calm down, but I still do not shift back to my base form. I stumble away from my workspace. not wanting to disturb anything in my anger.

I stalk around Val, where she sleeps in my chair. She is so small, especially compared to this form. Her entire body can fit within the cradle of my arm.

I sniff the top of her head and the slope of her cheek. She is peaceful by the fire. I adjust the blankets so as to cover her feet, the little toes peeking out shows her nails colored white. I had the urge to suck them into my mouth, but I restrained myself and cover them dutifully under the blanket.

She looks at peace beneath the white and I can imagine myself tucked along the curves of her body.

There’s no reason to disturb her needed sleep transferring her to the cottage. And I refuse to leave her side. She is not safe, no matter how happy she acts.

I have to trust that Vane and his pack can sniff out the intruder and run him off. The mists of Avalon Vale are persistent but there are some places where they are broken.

I pull another blanket and throw it on the ground. I stretch out there, not wanting to be far from her presence. Her scent.

Fresh and sweet like berries tumbled in cream. Hints of cinnamon and vanilla.

I breathe it all the way down into my nose until it is part of my being.

Soon she will allow me to learn her the feel of her the taste of her.

She is my mate and she is mine.

Even if she does not accept me, I am hers for the rest of my life. For her, I would raze planets without hesitation.

For her, I would gladly be the villain.

Chapter Ten

HAPPY PLACE

Valiana

Organization is my happy place. One by one, room after room is polished to a spit shine.

The last two days have been amazing. I keep journaling about how each day is the best day I’ve ever experienced and yet I am a liar because then the next day happens and then that becomes the best day.

Being able to debate on which days can be better has definitely not been part of my life story in a very long time.

At least I’m able to explore the house.

Torben never brings up the first night that I slept in the library.

He very much won his little challenge for himself. Not only do I like the tea I look forward to it each night now. And he says I can borrow whatever I want from the library.

He must have taken that to heart because he got me started with a whole slew of crime thrillers and murder mysteries among which are my favorite authors.

So far we have a steady rhythm of both of us working during the day and then sharing a meal around the dinner table. Tor finds himself on the main floor of the house for tea breaks or some other excuse. A part of me hopes he wants to get to know me better, and not because I’m just here and am a distraction.

I haven’t visited his area since that first night but he assures me that I am welcome down there anytime.

I’m not sure I trust myself taking him up on that invitation.

After all, I’m still here for another few weeks and I’m really not the type of person to want to, have a relationship with her boss essentially.

I broke down the project of cleaning up the house in multiple parts. It really didn’t need much of anything at all. Dust seems to be nonexistent in the Otherkin world.

But I’m still making myself useful. And tomorrow there will be a small luncheon here for the mayor and the Chamber of Commerce. I’d hoped to mingle with them and perhaps get the scoop on becoming a permanent resident here.

At the very least, extend my visa past the gala job.
