“Matthew has been like a dad to us,” she agrees.

Lucifer’s face falls slightly, and it would be almost unnoticeable if I wasn’t watching him so closely.

“But that just means we don’t need you, we want you,” Moni says and flies over to stand before him with her fingers wiggling and shaking her arms wildly.

“Moni, what are you doing?” I ask, stifling a laugh. She turns and glares at me.

“What do you think I’m doing? Get up here and join me,” she insists.

“Doing jazz hands?” I ask, confused, but I stand anyway and slowly approach.

“No, silly. I’m doing the jazzy hand butt grab thingy,” she says, hopping up and down. “Come on, come on. Altogether now like one big happy family,” she motions, and amazingly Lucifer gets up and moves so we’re all within reach, and we both look at Moni. “Okay, now grab each other’s butts!”

Before I can ask her any questions, like where in the hell did she hear that, or why she even thinks it’s appropriate, she leans in and slaps my ass. By the surprised gasp from Lucifer, Moni got him too.

“What the hell, Moni?” I yell, jerking back.

“What?” She looks up at me all innocent like. I swear, her eyes got twice as big as normal. “I thought that’s what we did as a family,” she says as her bark changes to seafoam green. “I see them do it all the time on the TV. They get in a huddle, give inspiring words, talk about being one big family and being there for each other, then slap each other on the butt. Should we change into tight pants first? Is that what I did wrong?”

“No, darling. That was just fine, but to save my back, why don’t you fly up here and we can do a jazzy hand back slap?” Lucifer suggests, and Moni smiles as her bark shines a bright yellow. She moves higher, and we all come together for a hug as Moni slaps us on the back.

Yep, we’re gonna have to work on the family dynamic.

“Still awkward now?” Lucifer asks, stepping back and looking at Moni, and she just shakes her head. “Good.”

We take our seats once again, and he turns his attention to me for a moment. “To answer your question, I would make an announcement that I have heirs. As far as Hell is concerned, I am royalty and I run it. But as you have seen, I don’t do it alone,” he says leaning back. “I am just one member of L.A.M.B., and we enjoy being known as such. We have been in a choir even before we fell, so it’s only natural for us to stay as such. You are the only people, besides Lilith, to know of our past.”

Damn. Talk about laying some heavy shit on us.

“A choir? So you sing?” Moni asks, and I stifle a chuckle. Lucifer’s eyes warm as he bites his bottom lip to hold in his laughter.

“No, sweetie. A choir is a group of Angels that are born or work together as a group. Think of your friends; if you were all Angels, you would be considered a choir,” he explains, grimacing when the room shakes from his curse words.

“Now, with that being said, I can hold off with the announcement if you would like.”

“Why would we want that?” Moni asks.

“I’m Lucifer, sweetie. I have enemies everywhere, and if I announce that I have heirs, that would not only give you power and prestige in the underworld, but—”

“It would also paint a huge target on us,” I finish for him.

“Oh,” Moni says as she sinks into her seat, blue starts rising onto her bark.

“Hey,” I say, reaching over. “Let’s take tonight and think about it, and maybe talk to the others, okay?” I suggest. I know how much it means to her to have this validation finally. “Because no matter what, it involves Chester and everyone else, not just us.”

“Okay. We can do that.” From the cycling color she’s sporting, she’s nervous about the idea, but still hopeful.

“Like I said, we can wait on the announcements, but I would like to spend more time with you and get to know you both, if that’s okay. Since I now know you have my blood running through your veins, you might have some tricks up your sleeves that you have yet to tap into, and I would like the chance to train with you.”

“Really? You mean I could become a badass?” Moni asks, imitating a Kung Fu kick.

“You’re already one. Like Bez said, it’s not easy to knock us down. We’ve been in battles since the beginning of time. But I would like to see if you have any traits that I might be able to jump start. But we can work out a time on the weekends so it doesn’t affect your school,” he says, smiling at both of us. “I just wanted to see how you both felt, as this has all come as a shock, but a pleasant one, I hope.”

I glance over and find Moni smiling, and I try to assess my own feelings, but I don’t really know how to process them. So, I tell the truth.

“To be honest, I don’t know. I always believed my father wanted nothing to do with me, so I never thought much of it. When Matthew took us in, he filled the hole that was missing. But I would like to learn from you, and share experiences. I just can’t tell the future and tell you how that’s going to turn out.” I shrug, and he nods.

“Understandable, and I respect that answer. I’m here if and when you do want me. Or when you need my help. All you have to do is ask, since I’m not as versed at mind reading. That was always your mother El’s trait.” He smiles as if he is recollecting a memory. A small pang hits me as I think of my mother. Her memory haunts me sometimes. It’s normally happy memories that pop into my head when Moni or Matthew says something, but as Lucifer brings up mom’s ability, it hits hard. I miss her so much.
