“Eek!” I squeal, jumping out of Knox’s arms and plopping down into Levi’s lap as I wrap my arms around him.

“So does this mean you don’t have to go to the ceremony tomorrow?” I ask, squeezing him to me and nuzzling against his neck.

“No! I d—”

“Actually, Levi, that might not be smart on your part. Your father mentioned it was King Elverson’s idea for your betrothal before they left Lilith in our care. If you slight him and stand Emer up at the altar, you or your loved ones, might be who pays. And I’m not taking that chance with my children.”

Moni turns a seafoam green, clearly showing her confusion, and JP’s eyebrows slightly raise at Lucifer’s choice of words. I might have to ask them what they think of Lucifer stepping in and talking on their behalf. They have had Matthew for the longest time, so what are they thinking? Man, I wish I had JP’s abilities right now.

‘Are you okay?’ I send to JP. He glances my way and gives me a smile and a thumbs up, but that’s all. I can’t really tell what he's thinking or feeling with that. Fuck.

“Well, what do you suggest since my magic won’t let me bond with her and standing her up is out of the question?” Levi questions.

“Why don’t we leave early in the morning, and we'll go with you and speak with the Council before you’re needed at your ceremony? We might even have to give him proof that you’ve been taken, and with us as witnesses, he’ll be less likely to retaliate as he’s been known to do,” Lucifer directs.

A weight is lifted off of me for once, and I couldn't be happier that Levi doesn’t have to give his soul to the Queen Harpy. “So what does the prophecy say about our tattoos?” I finally get around to asking Lucifer.

“Well, I don’t have the actual answer for that,” he admits. “No one will truly know your purpose, Rez. But as for the guys, it seems they are going to be the new Horsemen,” he says, dropping a damn bomb on us.

I hear a squeak, and from the corner of my eye, I see Moni turn magenta before she hits the floor with a plunk.

“Wait. What?” Ryker asks as his face drains of color.

“Ha. How do you like prophecies now?” Lynx laughs at the slacked expression on Ryker’s face.

CHAPTER 35

Sparkle Buns

JP

The Four Horsemen? Fuck. And I thought learning about Lucifer being my father was a shitshow. I squeeze Zeke as Lynx laughs at Ryker’s expression, but I can’t help agreeing with him. Ryker has always been a secret freak when it comes to old histories and stuff of that nature. Well, maybe it’s not that secret since he takes his conquests to his office full of his possessions, or at least used to. I know that’s changed since Rez has come into the picture as his mate.

Asatroth leans forward and clears his throat. “We’ve always assumed that the four would somehow resurrect one way or another since they now protect our world. They would need someone to embody what they need to accomplish in the physical world. They were so much more than just their personas.”

“Yeah, I have no idea how they got such a bad reputation from the humans.” Murmur shakes his head. “They were great up until the end. It was like something switched in them, and they became off balance and just snapped.”

“Boys, if there’s anything I can do to help. You know you can come see me, right?” Lilith pleads, and they all give her their assurance.

“I think we’ve shattered enough barriers this evening. I say we call it a night so we can have an early morning to work out a plan of attack on Elverson,” Lucifer says, helping Lilith to her feet. Murmur starts to walk out with Lilith when Lucifer calls back for me and Moni.

“JP? Moni? May I speak with you for a moment?”

“I’ll keep the bed warm for ya. Go speak with your old man,” Zeke says with a smirk. I hand him Reaper, and they both give me a kiss before joining the others. Knots takes a little longer to move but is quick to hide his struggle behind a smile when Rez reaches for him. I’m sure he’s still hiding the fact that without that Demstone, he wouldn’t be upright but bedridden. I hate the fact I can’t tell her what’s going on, but I have to respect his wishes. I just wish he wouldn’t keep this from her, especially something this big. As they walk out, they leave me and Moni with our old man.

Lucifer moves two of the five chairs that were at the front of the fireplace so they are more of a circle and sits down, beckoning us to join him.

We sit down and proceed to just look at each other for a moment. I easily pick up Moni’s thoughts of us actually being blood related, and I try to repress my smile. Her thoughts mirror mine; we can officially say we are related and not just say we were just raised together. It’s one of the best feelings in the world. Lucifer's penetrating gaze seems to scan over me and Moni as if he’s trying to pick up what traits we have of him. Or that just might be me projecting, since I’m doing the same to him.

“Is this awkward? Or is it just me finding this weird? It’s awkward, right? I feel like we should be on that Tom n’ Jerry show. Is that the name of the show Rez has quoted in the past?” Moni says as she twirls a vine between her fingers while her bark flashes to a dark gray, exposing her nerves.

“It’s somewhat, I suppose. I would like to think it’s more refreshing to sit here and know I have a true family,” Lucifer reveals.

“About that,” I jump in. “How does that work since… Well, we’re mutts and live in Purgatory and you’re…” I wave my hand at him, not knowing what to say.

“Lucifer? The Devil? Lord of Darkness? Satan? Unholy Royalty? Something like that?” He quirks his lip and wiggles his eyebrows, reminding me of myself and the shit I pull at times.

“Yeah.” I lean forward and rest my arms on my legs. “I mean, here’s the deal. Obviously, just like you pointed out to Lilith, we’re grown, and when we lost Mom, we had a father figure step in to raise us and make us feel wanted,” I explain, and out of my peripheral, I see Moni nodding along.
