I let go of Chester’s shoulders, and he crumbles to the floor, his matted hair leaving a bloody smear on the wall. I step back until I feel the wall against my back as my mind tries to process what this possibly means.

Okay, so Moni is missing and was likely taken if Chester was knocked out. Rez is alone in the Ever Woods, with no backup or weapons, and her magic isn’t guaranteed to work.

Fucking fantastic.

When I see her again, I’ll take my chances of her threat to castrate me and say I told you so.

I reach back out to communicate with the other Door Knights. ‘Does anyone have eyes on the Princes or JP? I need them urgently.’

‘I did have eyes on them, but you won’t be able to reach them now, I’m afraid,’ Birchman, the Administration Door Knight, answers.

‘How come?’

‘Anwen took them,’ he answers matter of factly.

Fuck! Why does she have them?

‘Thanks,’ I say begrudgingly.

I grind my teeth as I fight back the frustration at not being able to reach the people I need. For once, I feel completely and absolutely hopeless in my duties as a DK. No, that’s a lie; I’ve felt this way before when I didn’t catch the spell in Rez’s room, which was meant to kill her. But at least I was there to help dispel it. I’m stuck here helpless, with Moni’s bloodied mate and a communication system that has finally failed me.

Opening my eyes, I find Chester’s brown ones staring up at me as though I have all the answers.

“Did you find out anything?” he asks, and it kills me that I’ll have to break the hopeful look upon his face.

Reaching out, I grab his hand and pull him to his feet. “Let’s get you cleaned up,” I say, leading him down to the bathroom. “You have a nasty gash in the back of your head I need to fix before Moni finds you and blows up the dorm with her worrying. Un—”

“Oh, so you know where she’s at?” His voice takes on a hopeful tone. I’m hoping his passive nature makes him easier to handle when I break the news to him.

“I was hoping to find the guys and have them look into Moni’s disappearance. It seems that Anwen—one of the Fates—has stepped in, so we will go with Plan B.”

“What’s Plan B?” Chester asks warily as he pushes up his glasses and steps into the bathroom.

“Keep you here until it’s safe and then get a search party out to look for Rez and Moni.”

Chester’s eyes go wide as he looks up at me for a moment. I let out a sigh as he stands up straighter and clenches his jaw when he sees me kick the door closed.

Of course, he would pick now to grow a backbone.

“I’m doing this for your own good, Chester.”

“I’m sure you think so,” he says with a growl.

This is going to be a long night.

CHAPTER 4

Ring Around the Answers

Lynx

After the fireplace exploded for the second time, Lucifer allowed us to leave to get cleaned up, but not without a warning: that he will get his answers one way or another.

‘I still can’t believe I just met the Lucifer. He’s a fucking celebrity! The original OG. The Smooth Operator. I wonder if I can talk him into teaching me his ways. He can be my Obi-Wan Kenobi and I can be Anakin Skywalker.’

‘You know Anakin went bad, right?’ Rez shoots me a cocky smirk over her shoulder.

‘Fuck! Get out of my head!’ I shoot her a glare but smile when she sticks out her tongue, showing off her piercing.
