“Well, that solves that question—I’ll go second.” Lynx chuckles and slips behind me as we turn into Lilith’s room. Most of it looks the same, but instead of it being empty in the middle, there’s now a small altar covered with a silver sheet draped over it and a pillow.

“An altar. Why is there always an altar for these things?” I mumble as I walk over to the table and find the spells and directions.

“For purity,” Knots answers, as he strips down to his underwear. “It’s a way to keep the body pure if going through a transformation, or a way to bring honor to those that you are worshipping,” he adds as he folds up the last of his clothes and lays them down on the bench that Lilith had placed in the room.

He winks at me once he’s standing in his tight boxer briefs and shoots me a smirk. “I mean, if you feel like worshipping me later, I won’t say no.”

I roll my eyes and scoff. “Get your sexy ass on the altar and behave.” Determined to make this happen, I skim over the instructions, and it seems simple enough. He just has to drink it while I say the words and be his anchor. Great. How the fuck do you become an anchor? I glance around the room not seeing what I’m looking for, so I call out, “Benny.” I peer under the table. “Benny, are you here?”

“Here I am.” I hear a chirp and see Benny scurry out from behind a bookshelf.

“How did you even fit back there?” I ask as she climbs up the table. Her long dragon body stretches out once she reaches the top.

“Magic!” Her whiskers bristle, and I smile at her before pointing at the spell.

“This seems simple enough, but do you know how I become an anchor?” Hopefully, she has a clue because the only other person in this room no longer has his memory and is browsing books over by the door while giggling at the titles. I don’t even think I want to know what’s over there.

“Yes, it’s simple. Just maintain contact with them throughout the process,” she nods.

“That’s it?” I ask. Surely there’s more?

“Yep! Anything else you needed?” she asks, but I shake my head, and she crawls down the table leg and runs back behind the bookcase.

“You okay over there?” Knots asks, looking over at me. I give him a small smile and nod as I grab his vial.

“Yep, just wanted to verify something so I don’t fuck this up.”

He grabs my free hand and squeezes. “You've got this, and I trust you. Lynx would trust you implicitly if he just remembered,” he whispers, but I peer over toward Lynx and notice how he’s paused in his perusal of the books.

“Thanks.” I lean down and give him a gentle kiss before pulling away. “Okay, let’s restore the memories we didn’t know you lost, huh?” I move to the end of the altar where his head is and hand him the vial before placing both hands on his shoulders, and he makes quick work of downing the contents. Saying the words for the spell, I hold my breath as I watch for any little sign of it working.

Knots closes his eyes before he seems to go immediately into a deep sleep. His eyes start bouncing back and forth under his eyelids before his body warms. My instincts kick in, and I go to pull away, but Lynx’s hand shoots out to still my own.

“Don’t. You have to hold on. Here, I’ll help.”

He comes up behind me, lending me his support and pushing me closer to Knots when all I want to do is step back from the heat that encompasses me. My eyes close as his hands gently wrap around my wrists and hold me there as he whispers into my ear.

“You can do this, Rez. Just concentrate.” His words slowly fade away as I feel my body gradually drift forward. A gasp leaves me as I feel myself fall.

When I open my eyes, I find myself in a meadow. The sun is high in the sky and warming my body, while the grass is up to my hips, swaying in the gentle breeze. Tall, green trees surround me, and as I turn around, I notice I’m all alone.

“Knots!” I call out, but I get no answer besides hearing birds in the far-off distance. Taking a chance, I turn toward the woods, keeping the meadow in my sight, and look around for any sign of life. Laughter comes back from the meadow, and keeping to the shadows, I creep closer to see what’s going on. There’s a little girl wearing a faded dress, holding a little boy’s hand, who’s wearing only pants.

The two children slowly look around the meadow. From where I’m standing, I can tell they are talking, but I can’t make out their words. The girl is slightly taller than the boy, but they both have brown hair and bright blue eyes. They slowly smile and turn to run the other way, only to teleport in a blink of an eye and pop up behind the spot they were just at.

Knots suddenly stands up from out of the tall grass and wipes off his leather pants, and the kids quickly tackle him, making him chuckle. They exchange words and a thrill runs through me as I step out of the woods and approach. Knots hasn’t changed much, except he’s wearing his hair tied back and he’s shirtless.

“Knots!” I shout, but he doesn’t respond. As I get closer, his words come across crystal clear.

“So it is. Race you back!” he yells, taking off in a run with the kids chasing after him.

Fuck! I didn’t know I would have to exercise during this spell.

I take off after all of them as we dart through the grass and into the woods. There’s a clear path, so I don’t have to worry too much about tripping, and soon enough, we come to a small log cabin.

“Momma, we’re home,” the little girl calls.

“We found him,” the boy calls as he grabs Knots’ hand and pulls him into the cabin behind him.
