I slowly walk in, and since no one can sense me, I finally realize this must be a memory of sorts. Glancing around the cabin, I notice it’s all one room. An open fire pit has a funnel at the top to allow the smoke to rise out, and skins and pelts lay on the other side of the room, probably making up a sleeping area. There’s a table that someone must have made by hand that’s next to the fire pit, and there are hand-crafted utensils laid out.

What era did we end up in? It’s a mixture of the stone age and home on the prairie.

“Let’s eat while the food is warm,” Knots says. The familiarity stabs a hole in my heart as I watch him pour water over the kids' hands, then his own, before sitting down at the wooden table.

“Thank you, Kanotiel, for the food,” the kids both say before helping themselves to the meat sitting in the middle of the table. As the kids busy themselves with the food and drinking out of small leather pouches, another person walks into the cabin, and jealousy really does rear her ugly head.

A gorgeous woman with brown eyes and long blonde hair walks in wearing a long pale green dress. “What are you silly willys doing? You’re supposed to be training your skills, not filling your stomachs.” Her voice is musical, and when she smiles at the table, I have the undeniable urge to push her out of the cabin.

“Can’t let the food go to waste. I did work hard to kill it,” Knots says as he takes a bite.

The woman sits down across from him and smiles, but this time it doesn’t meet her eyes. “About that. You know you don’t have to do that,” she starts, and clenches her fist in her lap. Knots frowns but continues chewing. “In fact, each time you reveal yourself to us, you’re making yourself a target. I knew what I was doing when I chose this life.”

“Angelette,” he sighs. “You know I cannot turn my back on my flesh and blood,” he stresses, looking over at the children eating, and tears gather in my eyes. Oh, God. Did Knots have a family and children?

“Kanotiel, how many times do I have to tell you that you didn’t turn your back? I did. I walked away from Heaven. I decided to fall to Earth and give up my wings and live this life.”

Knots bows his head for a moment. “But you are the only true family I have. We were born of the same flame. Siblings. You are my world.” His eyes start to water as he stares at his sister, and I feel awful that I even had a glimmer of jealousy toward her. I watch as she reaches across the table and grabs Knots’ hand.

“Yes, and we will always have that connection, brother. But you still serve a higher purpose while I fell for love.” She smiles and looks at her children.

“Yes, and where is he now?” Knots asks, and she pulls her hand away as if he burned her. Her jaw clenches, and she takes in a deep breath before looking back at Knots.

“I can only hope that he comes back to us, but I do not regret my choice. The point is, as a Guardian Angel, you know you shouldn’t be revealing yourself to us.” She smiles. “You shouldn’t even have us as wards. Who did you bribe?”

“I’m still not going to tell you.” Knots laughs as he winks at the kids next to him.

I see a flash of light, and the sensation of falling comes again before I land on my ass with an oomph. Glaring up quickly, a gasp leaves me as I see Angels standing around the room before me. Males and females with different colored robes and wings mill about, but their attention is not on me, it's on Knots.

He's in the middle of the room, but he has the most beautiful wings along his back, every shade of blue covering their beautiful surface. He's kneeling before a panel of Angels in white robes, who are sitting in chairs. I can’t make out their faces since they seem to glow from within, but their voices give away their sex.

“Kanotiel of the Acetylene flame,” the Angel in the middle lords over him. “You are hereby accused of disobeying orders and protecting mortals we had marked to die. How do you plead?”

What? I run to the front and bring my attention to Knots as his face raises to address the man in front of him. Even though he can’t see me, I take a step back at the fire burning in his eyes and the blood on his face and clothes.

Oh, God. What happened? I cover my mouth to hold in the sob as Knots' voice comes out in a feral growl.

“Guardian Angels protect their wards. Your orders were wrong.”

“That is not your place to decide,” another voice speaks up.

“How can you condemn one of your own to die?” Knots yells back, pulling on the restraints I now see holding him to the ground. They are almost invisible except when he moves them, but I can see them ripple, like a glamour.

“You broke the rules, Kanotiel. As a Guardian, you should not reveal yourself. They had to be taken care of.”

“As God’s right hands, we protect his cherished creatures, do we not?” Knots counters.

“Your job is to follow orders and obey. Look into the Seraph and be judged.”

The Angels in the room start to sing as a light shines before Knots. I turn my gaze up but have to shield my eyes as it’s too bright to look at. It’s only a few moments before the Angels stop singing and the light dims. I bring my attention back to the front and shriek.

“Fuck! Oh my god, you’re uglier than the Arte Demons,” I cry out and jump back. If this is an Angel, the Bibles have it wrong. What’s before me is a massive eyeball with eight wings and smaller eyes on each wing.

It starts spinning upright before us, and an image forms like watching a TV. I watch as I see Knots running out of the woods like an avenging Angel, his sword pulled and easily slicing into the man that had grabbed his sister by surprise. The kids scream and run toward Knots, and he spins to swipe upwards into one of the bandits, cleaving him in two. There’s a total of ten men that Knots kills to protect his family. The scene cuts off shortly after as Angelette goes to Knots with wide eyes and yells at him that they know and he needs to go.

Knots’ head drops to his chest as he takes in ragged breaths. “You are hereby granted your deepest desire,” another Angel says.

Knots' head jerks up as the Seraph’s wings fold in front of itself.
