‘What makes you think I’ll be alive long enough to wear you?’ I ask as we walk up to Bez.

Bez’s dark eyes scan over us before he closes them and takes in a deep breath, sighing with a slight smile. “I love the smell of fresh meat.” His deep baritone rings out. Lynx swallows audibly and looks over at me.

“Let’s work on your fire ability,” Bez says, and pushes off the wall.

“We don’t have any,” I squeak, backing up.

“You will when I get done with you,” Bez promises with a sinful smile.

CHAPTER 45

Full of Gadgets

Lynx

Bez was right. By the time he’s done with Rezzi-bear and me, we have some kick-ass fire abilities. The fucking ability to shield ourselves or manipulate its direction, that shit. By the way, if you’re not concentrating, it’s the fastest way of getting rid of your hair. I wouldn’t recommend it. I don’t think I’ll ever get hair to grow back on my left calf. We might not be able to conjure Hellfire, but with Bez’s help, we are able to now redirect the fire to work for us and not against us.

Astaroth presented all of us with new weapons when it was our turn to work with him. Since I spent all my time learning how to shift, I was presented with two black Demon Push Daggers that pop out of wrist guards that I can wear. Talk about fancy. They’re spelled so if I’m wearing them when I shift, I’ll be able to still use them. Can you imagine it? A deadly fishy popping up out of the water. Ka-cha! Who’s the sushi now!?

Astaroth handed Rez two silver handles a little longer than her palms, and she about threw them back at him when the blades popped out and almost cut her. Apparently, he made her glaives that could retract, and depending on her mood, they present certain colors and have abilities. What abilities? Fuck all we know so far. He didn’t elaborate, and I guess we'll just have to find out at our next training session. All we did during our time was learn how to mentally connect to our weapons—yeah, I know how weird that sounds—and how to activate them to open and close.

Murmur did a round of making sure we each had some kind of defense, and if we couldn’t make our own defense like my Rezzi-bear, he equipped us with it. He ran me through a few shifts to prove that I could protect myself from ice, wind, heat, rocks, and his fucking Hokey Pokey brain thing. To be honest, I thought I was going to fail that one, but ever since I got my memory back, things seem to be coming easier to me. My shifts are seamless, I am faster and more agile, and to top it off, I’m with Rez once again. My mental shield is flawless when I actually want it to work, but mostly, I want it down so I feel the connection to Rez.

Our time with Lucifer was a trip! I mean an acid trip. Ever play two truths and a lie with the Devil? Well, I have. Learning how to spot half-truths and lies was like Lucifer giving us a green light to see into his soul. How many people can say they learned how to spot that shit from The Deceiver himself? I think if I died today, I would be a happy man. Not because I would be separated from Rez, just the opposite. I’m confident enough that I could spot half-truths and finagle my way back to her side with this kind of knowledge.

Here’s a tip, watch the direction of their eyes. Yes, it’s true people can maintain eye contact with you while they lie; Lucifer is a pro at it. But subconsciously, most of them will try to cover up a lie. Like covering their eyes or mouth while lying or their eyes will dart. My favorite was watching how he either embellished or kept things too short.

As we walk over to Lilith, she holds up two small black backpacks. She has a table set up behind her with all sorts of vials and herbs and even a few binders. What are we about to do? Go to class?

“Look what I have for you, just in case you can’t access your pocket dimensions,” she says with a smile.

“What is it?” I ask.

“I’m so glad you asked, Lynx. It’s a mini pack I’ve created that magically attaches to you and will shrink or change along with your forms. Plus, it’s nearly indestructible. Pretty stylish, huh?” she asks, and hands the packs over to me and Rez.

It’s soft leather, and I open it up and see how small it is. “No offense, but how in the Hell am I supposed to fit anything in it?” I ask, peering into the side pocket.

“Are you sure you’re a Supe?” Lilith asks, cocking her head to the side as she regards me. “The bag is spelled to hold all sorts of things. Have you ever seen Mary Poppins? Think of her bag… It’s endless. Her bag was crafted to mimic a pocket dimension.”

“This is beautiful, but what’s a pocket dimension?” Rez asks, closing up her pack and setting it on the floor.

“Oh! I’m sorry. I thought you knew what that was. A pocket dimension is a small space where you can access and store items, like weapons, and survival items—”

“Like coffee!” Moni yells and pulls out a coffee just to demonstrate. She’s standing next to Chester, where she should be training but obviously is listening in on us.

“Exactly. That’s what Knots and Moni use all the time,” Lilith explains.

Rez shoots Moni a glare across the room and holds up a finger to Lilith before she takes off running. She tackles Moni at Murmur’s station and runs her fingers up and down the sides of Moni, tickling her.

“Magic? Really? You really couldn’t tell me that you had a S.I.N. box that you kept coffee in? Ugh, you’re the worst,” she says with laughter, getting up when Moni yells “uncle.”

“I didn’t know what it was called. So don’t get mad at me, bestie. You know I would tell you everything! You’re my bosom bumpkin buddy. What’s a S.I.N. box, anyway? Is that what it’s really called? Lilith didn’t go over that part with us. Instead, I got a sack that I’m gonna use to collect herbs and a bunch of smelly spells,” she says as fast as possible.

‘I swear, we need our own class to learn Moni. Do you think we could get credit for that?’ I ask, catching Rez’s lip twitch before she answers Moni.

“Lilith said it was a pocket dimension, but I’d rather call it a S.I.N. box. Survival Items Needed. Like your coffee,” Rez explains.

“Or extra underwear for you when you’re not home!” Moni fires back, and I immediately choke on my tongue.
