“I knew Matthew couldn’t have been on the side of evil. He’s just too sweet. But that Jeffrey guy has to be bad news to say Rez needed to die. That’s my bestie he’s talking about,” Moni says, standing up on the sofa cushion.

“Easy there, Moni. I’m sure he just didn’t know any better and wasn’t thinking.” Chester tries to calm Moni down while pulling on her arm.

“Well, I say we go shave him bald and leave him outside for the butterbees!” she demands, throwing her tiny fist in the air.

What is her fascination with those damn bees?

“It’s not Jeffrey we have to worry about,” Knox says, catching my attention.

“What do you mean?” I ask, giving him a worried look. This is the first I’ve heard about needing to worry about anyone before.

Knox stands up and pulls out his wallet from his sleep pants. Who keeps their wallet in their sleep pants? I mean, I guess since we’re in Hell, we really don’t have anything that’s ours. My knife and phone are on me as well, but I’m still in my day clothes. To each their own, though.

He hands me a scrap piece of paper.

“What is this?” I ask, looking at a list of scribbles.

“I found that right after I caught Brooks snooping where he shouldn’t be,” he confesses. “Remember when we… ugh… got stuck together?” he asks, his cheeks turning a slight pink.

I snort at how cute he sounds.

“Yeah. Our first time,” I say and squint up at him. “What does this have to do with it?” I ask.

“Well, I was on my way to have my appointment with Dad, but I ran into his secretary instead. He left me a letter since he had another meeting he had to attend. That’s what I found on her desk that didn’t belong.”

“Wasn’t that like Tuesday morning?” I ask, making sure I had my days right.

“Yeah. Two days ago, almost.” Knox nods.

I look over the paper while Ryker and Lynx lean over my shoulder and take in the list of my actions. It looks like whoever wrote it did it so fast that it’s in what my mother called chicken scratch.

Got roundabout opposite princes

Hanging around Princes, befriending them?

Unsuccessful attempt to grab target at Lilith’s ritual

Lyrical was successful with blood sample

What. The. Hell?

“How do they know my grandparents cut me off?” I ask, stunned that whoever wrote that knows about something so personal. “The only person who knew was Lynx.” I point my thumb in his direction.

“It had to be tapped,” Zeke supplied. “Before we get our phones, they normally sweep them for bugs and hook up the internet through the IT department. Question is: why would they need to bug your phone?” he asks.

I don’t know, but I don’t feel like carrying it around anymore if the damn thing is being traced. I pull it out of my pocket, and Levi hands it off to Zeke for me.

JP reaches over the back of the loveseat and gently grabs the paper from me to see it for himself, and Moni and Chester move over to look as he shows Levi. “How did Lyrical get your blood? I thought you were going to wait for Steinbeck?” JP asks, giving me a look of shock.

“I did wait,” I explain. “At least I think I did.” I think back to that day and what happened leading up to it. Lynx was missing and presumed dead, the dorm room was trashed from the fight and my meltdown earthquake, and everything was crumbling around me. I’m not even sure how I functioned that day, but I remember the visit with Lyrical, and I know it was Steinbeck who took my blood the next day.
