“Levi, are you able to find the magical imprint off of that?” Knox asks, pointing to the paper.

Levi takes the paper and rubs it in his hand for a moment before handing it back to JP. “Yeah. I should be able to do it in a few days. If we can get the ingredients, I could do it while we are here.”

“Thanks, man.”

“Here you go, Rez. I got the tracker,” Zeke says, holding up a little silver capsule. I wouldn’t have guessed that to be a tracker if I saw it lying around the room. He hands me back the phone and gives the device to Levi. Holding it between his fingers, he whispers a few words and the device changes to dust, falling to the floor.

“Thanks.” I give them a weak smile as I slide the phone back into my pocket when the memory hits me, and I bolt upright in my seat. “JP! You remember when you answered the door that morning and the movers came in?” I ask JP and he nods his head, probably wondering where this is going. “Well, I felt a pinch on my arm while I was distracted by the door, and she apologized, saying she didn’t mean to scratch me. Maybe she took my blood then?” I offer, hoping that helps answer that question.

“That could have been it. You had different nurses that came in and checked on you, right?” JP confirms.

“But the question is: why would they even want Rez’s blood? What is the purpose?” Lynx asks, his brows pulled down in worry that somehow dull his turquoise eyes.

“It can be used for a lot of things, depending on how much they took, or how strong your powers were at the time it was taken,” Levi says, giving me a thoughtful look. “It can be used for anything as mundane as seeing what species you are, looking for genetic markers like your birth parents, or used in different awakening spells that use blood so the caster doesn’t have to use their own.”

“What’s the atypical uses for taking her blood?” Knots asks.

Levi swallows audibly and doesn’t meet my eyes for a moment. I already know I’m not going to like what he has to say when his hazel eyes meet mine and he has a worry line between his brows. “Tracking her movements, sending her to her closest kin, regardless of differences in both time and space, to slowly corrupting her blood for the spellcaster’s purpose.”

Well, I’m up shit’s creek without a fucking paddle.

There’s a bump at my closet doors that causes me to pause and give it my attention. The doors are slightly ajar, though I remember closing them. Zeke gets up and fully opens them. Knox quickly joins him when they walk inside. I hold my breath for the few seconds they are gone, and Zeke walks back out, holding up a small gold earring.

“Missing an earring?” he says with a clenched jaw.

My ears are pierced, but I haven’t worn earrings since I got here, and Moni hasn’t either.

“Whose is that, and how did it end up in my closet?” I ask.

“Trometh, by the smell of it,” Knox answers as he walks back in. “And I have no idea. There’s no door or signs of a secret passage that I can find,” he growls out. His frustration slams into me, making me gasp. I send soothing vibes down our link as Knox closes his eyes for a brief moment to calm down. He takes a deep breath and slowly exhales before returning to his seat.

“You okay?” I ask, and he simply nods before swinging his attention back to Zeke, who lays down the lone earring on the desk. Zeke leaves the closet doors open and turns back to face us, shrugging.

“I don’t know what to make of that,” he confesses before sitting back down at the computer desk.

“I say we take it for what it looks like. Someone was trying to eavesdrop, and it was either Trometh or someone who wanted us to believe it was him,” Chester helpfully speaks up.

“Agreed. Either way, we can confront him with that earring tomorrow,” Levi instructs.

Great. Now I have to worry about the purple nurple Demon dude.

CHAPTER 13

Satanic Deals

Rez

After the eye-opening files, we agreed that there was obviously more at play than possessed Lilith just trying to help me with my bind and said our final goodnight to everyone. Zeke puts the room back together, leaving the earring on a nightstand, and we finally change into night clothes. We talk for a bit about what we want to do together once we get back to Nova until we pass out with him being the big spoon. Honestly, it’s perfect for me.

The next morning, I wake up with a start as a bulldozer bangs on our door. It looks like we managed to get about five hours of sleep before Bez yells that it’s almost time for breakfast and we better not keep Lilith waiting. Since he doesn’t give us a time limit, we opt to just brush our teeth and get dressed as fast as possible. It’s kinda nice to get ready with Zeke, even though we’re in a rush. It reminds me of what a “normal” relationship would be like. It’s the little things, like catching him smiling at me. Or the other way around, and he catches me doing the same, making my stomach flutter at the domestic bliss of it all.

Zeke wears a green tank top and black shorts, which bring out his red hair and slight scruff, along with his green eyes. Damn, he looks yummy. I dress in a lightweight gray shoulder crop hoodie top, and gray and pink leggings with a pocket. I make sure the material is light enough to combat the heat down here.

Since I still don’t know what to do with my knife, Zeke suggests a holster that I can attach to my thigh until we get home. Impressed with the simple solution, I have him conjure one from the closet to add to my wardrobe as I turn to grab Trometh’s earring from the nightstand, only to find it missing.

We look around the room for a few minutes before giving up.

“Did you find it?” I ask, straightening out my clothes from looking under the bed.
