“Hey, I’ve heard that saying before when listening to people talk about the Withering Sulks. So, who is the other boogeyman?” I retort, raising an eyebrow his way.

Astaroth snorts, bringing our attention to him as he comes to the front of the fireplace. “The Withering Sulks only affect the people on the ground in Purgatory. This boogeyman will tear down everyone, even those on Earth—if he gets that far—and yes… It seems Zeke was the vessel he used to break free of his shackles.”

“Who?” Moni asks, leaning forward and completely enraptured by Astaroth’s story.

“Cain.”

“Cain, as in…?” Lynx asks, coming up behind me.

“Cain… As in the first murderer.”

“Fuck,” Lynx and I say simultaneously.

CHAPTER 17

99 Mistakes, but she Wasn’t one

Ryker

“Are you sure you don’t want to go eat lunch?” Rez asks, as I watch her ass sway before me. What I want to eat for lunch is between those delicious thighs.

After the revelation of Cain and Adam being free, Astaroth informed us that Lilith was more than likely going to be knocked out with a tranquil spell for the rest of the day. Lilith would not have the chance to go to the market and get the ingredients for the memory potion. Of course, this upset my temptress, so Bez—the big softy—compromised, deciding to show us where Lilith’s workshop was. Apparently, the fragile state Lilith is in causes her to have extreme emotional mood swings. Obviously, that’s not what L.A.M.B. said—that’s just Rez’s observations—but clearly, she’s onto something.

“Nah! What you and Levi did this morning filled me up to the brim,” I tease and watch Rez’s cheeks blush pink. I want to bend her over and make her other cheeks match in color.

“You’re just jealous,” she spits back.

“Damn right I am. I know how good that mouth is when it’s being wicked.” I wink.

“Do you guys need a room?” Levi chuckles.

“Who needs a room? We have a wall,” I point out.

Bez clears his throat, bringing our attention to the fact that we’ve stopped in front of a door. “As you don’t want to wait, you need to find the spell and make an ingredient list,” Bez says, and with that, he turns and leaves.

“He’s really grumpy, huh?” Rez whispers to me.

“Nah. He’s really a big teddy bear when you get to know him,” I say following Levi in the room.

“Uh-huh,” she says doubtfully. “Teddy Bear with claws maybe,” she mumbles before entering the room. “Wow. Now, this is a workshop.” Rez whistles.

The room has two full walls of bookshelves with tomes, loose pages, and jars. The other two walls have potted herbs, shelves full of crystals, dust, and things I do not know about. This is more Rez and Levi’s wheelhouse. I’m just tagging along because I wanted to instead of going to lunch.

“Hello. May I help you find something?” a tiny voice speaks out, and I pause as I listen for the words again.

Am I hearing things?

Rez’s head swings around quickly, glancing about and trying to find where it’s coming from.

“Do you guys hear that?” Rez asks, bending down and searching underneath the table beside me.

“Um, Rez. Are you okay?” Levi asks before going to a bookcase.

“You mean you don’t hear that?” she asks as she moves her hair out of her face.

“No.” He shoots her a concerned look. “All I hear is the watering spell going off, taking care of the plants in the upper rows over there,” he confesses, pointing across the room.

Well, shit. If he’s not hearing anything, then how come Rez and I are?
