“H—How are you not frozen?” Lucifer demands as he stands and eyes me up and down.

“Wait, you mean you didn’t mean to leave me unfrozen?” I question.

“Told you there was something special about her,” Murmur says in a cocky tone.

Lucifer blinks owlishly at me before shaking his head and unfreezing everyone with a wave of his hand.

My friends take in an audible sigh of relief but give Lucifer wary glances. I don’t blame them; he just froze their asses with one word when all we did was express worry for a friend.

“How rude!” Moni says, and Lucifer’s jaw clenches.

“I apologize. I didn’t handle that in the best fashion, but this is my home, and I don’t handle chaos well,” he says, straightening his suit as he regards us once more.

“Haha! See, Rez! I did it! I’m no longer a cat!” Lynx cheers in triumph. His voice breaks the tension in the room. I’m a little disappointed that he’s wearing clothes, but smile all the same because, either way, he is able to shift.

“See, it wasn’t all that hard. Now you just have to practice until you can do it with ease,” I say, shrugging a shoulder.

All he does is scoff as he heads to the bar. “Not before I get my own drinks. I need to catch up!” he says, doing a little two-step around the sofa.

“Amihlg! Irmwl jli!” The red overalls Arte Demon runs into the room waving his arms.

Well, that was quick.

“It’s really annoying that I can’t understand them,” I mumble, and I hear a few people agree.

Growling, Lucifer snaps his fingers once again, but this time, the roots of my hair start tingling. The room tilts as a dizzying spell hits me momentarily, so I reach out and grab a hold of the closest thing, which happens to be Levi.

“Are you okay?” Levi holds me steady as I try to focus on him.

“Yeah, I think so,” I nod.

“Speak,” Lucifer commands.

“Master. A guard stopped me on the way and hastily asked me to deliver the news urgently that his body is gone.” The Arte Demon shakes as it bows his head and slowly backs up. Trometh walks into the room, looking grim as well.

“It’s true, sir. A guard was on his way to inform you. When they did their daily checks yesterday, they noticed his absence.” His voice started out loud at first, but slowly loses its flare as he takes in the atmosphere.

Yesterday? Why wouldn’t they notify him sooner than now if that was the case? I murmur to myself, but apparently, I didn’t block my thoughts because it’s Knots who answers me.

“Each level has its own time zone. The highest level has no difference in time, but depending on where this ‘he’ was kept, it could have been the equivalent of a week,” Knots explains.

Fuck.

“That’s not good, is it?” I ask, noticing how all the color is draining from Lucifer’s face. But it’s pretty neat that I can now understand the Arte Demon. Does this mean I can understand Demonic, or whatever it’s called?

In a flash of silver, Lucifer disappears, and Murmur reaches out for Zeke’s hands. “Can you feel his presence now?” he asks in an urgent tone.

Astaroth walks in and glances around with drawn eyebrows, but Bez quickly walks over, pulls him into a corner, and starts whispering to him.

“Um…” Zeke’s eyes wander around the room.

“Concentrate, Ezekiel. Can you feel that dark entity in any of the recesses of your mind or body? Do you feel any different? Lighter perhaps? Happier?” Murmur presses.

“Yes, I feel lighter and happier. Right before the floor opened up, my body locked up and I couldn’t control myself there for a moment, but since then… I’ve felt free, for the first time ever,” he confesses. I smile, feeling happy for Zeke. He’s finally able to get that gray cloud away from him.

“FUCK!” Murmur yells and spins away from Zeke. He runs his hands through his brown hair before slowly letting out a breath and bringing his attention back to Zeke. Pursing his lips, he tries to give him a smile, but it’s a lost cause.

“Sorry,” he says, collapsing his hands before him. “I’m happy that you’re finally free of that entity, but it seems you were possibly used to free our version of the boogeyman,” Murmur admits.
