“Angel’s here alright, and she has two knife-throwing Demons with good aim,” I spit out as my heart tries to beat out of my chest.

“Are you hurt?” JP asks, assessing me for wounds.

“No, thanks to my little Reaper here,” I say, and give him kisses as he comes up and licks my face.

“Rez, how big can you make your shield?” Zissa asks.

“Ahh. I don’t know. I haven’t tried shielding anything larger than a personal shield. Why? What are you thinking?” I hesitate as she looks at me and then back at my weapons.

“I have an idea, but you might not like it.”

Well, at least she’s being honest.

* * *

“For the record, I don’t like this idea. If I die, I’m haunting your ass and making Lucifer torture you,” I say as I white knuckle my glaives. The rocks in this room range from mid-thigh to waist high, but that still leaves our party open to getting hit while we try to advance to the other side. And since I’m the only one with solid defensive capabilities, I’m playing bait.

The only thing I have going for me is JP and Lynx can read my thoughts easily and relay them to the group. But Lynx shifts into his tiger, so he’s useless in conveying my thoughts now to the rest of the group as Zissa pulls her knives.

“When you’re ready.” She nods, squatting down next to the entrance.

Here goes nothing.

Pulling up my shield, I wrap it tightly around my body, noticing how much easier pulling it on gets, and take in a deep breath. I’m gonna die! I dash toward the first Demstone, and when I see the Demon, I dive, trying to dodge the knife. Yes, I’m protected, but they don’t need to know that. That’s the whole point of playing bait.

“What the fuck do you want?” I yell out to them.

“You,” one of them yells back as I eye my next target to hide behind. It’s a lower rock, so I won’t be able to hide there long before moving on.

“Oh! Well, that’s all you had to say.” I wipe my sweaty palms on my pants before re-gripping my glaives and sprinting to my target.

“Dead,” the other Demon says as a knife whizzes in front of me, causing me to jerk back and slip.

Fuck this.

‘JP! I’m just going to run. So send them out in a few seconds, but warn them, it’s about to get bumpy.’

They want bait? Well, they are about to get it. Keeping my eyes on the Demons, I run to the next stone but start singing in my head. My deal with Lucifer was only to stop deliberately trying to tear down his house. He said nothing about Hell in general.

“The B-I-B-L-E. Yes, that’s the book for me. I stand alone on the Word of God. The B-I-B-L-E.”

Unfortunately, that’s the only verse I know from the random times a friend dragged me to church. My family didn’t really attend church, so I sing it over and over again. As I planned, the ground starts shaking, and I continue to try to run and draw their attention.

“What’s going on?” one of them yells, and I see a knife fly through the air into his neck. Zissa’s aim is true even with the floor shaking. Lynx’s tiger form has been slinking close enough that when the other Demon turns to see the knife in his partner’s throat, he sees Lynx.

Instead of running away, like I thought he would, the Demon runs toward me. His arms come up to grab me, but I bring my hands up, and he crashes into my shield as his eyes go wide. I stop singing in my head while he just stands there for a moment until his eyes roll up and blood dribbles out of his mouth. Surprised, I glance down and I see my glaives stuck in his gut.

“Eww,” I say and shake my arms, trying to dislodge him. “Um, help?” I say, looking over and finding JP hiding his chuckles.

“Congrats on your first kill!” Zissa says, grabbing a few Demstones as she makes her way to me.

“He won’t get off,” I say as his body goes slack and falls to the ground, rudely taking my glaives with him.

“Sounds like a personal problem,” JP says as he runs by us and peeks around the corner.

“You know, I’m sure they have classes that teach you how to get your man off. You might want to check into that,” Lynx teases.

“Men,” Zissa says as she comes over. “You okay?” she asks, giving me a sincere look.
