“I—I didn’t mean—” I’m so lost for words. I’ve never purposely killed someone before.

“On one hand, it gets easier,” Zissa says as she pulls out my glaives from his gut and wipes off the blood on his shirt.

“On the other?” I ask, looking at her and feeling lost.

“It never really does; you just become numb to it,” she says, handing back my weapons.

I don’t know if I’m cut out for this badassery.

CHAPTER 29

Getting the Right Tune

Rez

After checking for Angel, or any other Demons hiding nearby, we gather what Demstones we can and head back to our check in. I take one look at the groups emerging from the other tunnels and I can tell they had their own scuffles. As soon as Levi sees Moni’s group, he rushes over to check on them. Moni’s covered in grime, and Zeke has blood around his mouth and hands. Ryker and Chester have blood on their weapons, but they look somewhat decent except that Chester’s glasses are crooked.

“Did you cause that earthquake, or was that something else?” Ryker asks me.

“Yeah. We needed a distraction,” I admit, and he gives me an appreciative nod before giving me a kiss and whispering that’s my girl.

He gives Zissa a fist bump before turning to talk to JP.

Knox quickly makes his way over to me and pulls me into him for a hug, which I return, wrapping my arms tightly around him. I don’t know why, but tears burn behind my lids as I close my eyes and just take in his embrace and strength.

“The first kill is never easy,” Knox whispers. I give him a pitiful laugh.

“I don’t know why I feel so stupid about crying over someone that was trying to kill me,” I admit.

“It’s because you have a heart and a good soul, kitten. Don’t ever let someone take that away from you,” he says into my hair. While I soak in his warmth, I reach out to Knots’ shield and see that it’s still in place and holding strong. Just to be on the safe side, I send out a little more of my magic and reinstate the hold. Knox rocks me back and forth until someone asks if we knew who attacked us.

“No clue,” Moni answers.

“We saw Angel,” I say, pulling away from Knox.

“Are you sure?” Levi asks, and I give him a deadpan look.

“No, now that I think about it. It was an elephant in a pink tutu. Yes, it was Angel, but she didn’t stick around.”

“Well, we got some Bat flowers and Demstones. You guys?” Knots points to his satchel, and Moni and I do as well.

“How many did you get?” I ask, checking to make sure we have enough. Once everyone counts out how many stones they collected, we’re good to go. We have enough for the seller and for our potions.

“Okay then, let’s get out of here.”

Suddenly, the ground starts shaking and loose rocks start to fall. JP turns to me, “Rez?”

“It’s not me,” I insist.

Knox turns to Lynx. “Did you hear that?”

“Explosives?” Lynx nods and then jumps to the side when a large rock twice the size of a dumpster falls next to him. “Fuck!”

“Everyone get together so I can open this portal real quick!” Levi yells.

As dust and smaller rocks rain down on us, I check above us and notice cracks zigzagging along the ceiling. It’s not going to hold very long. Focusing intently, I picture a shell over our heads, reinforced by layers and layers of tough, unbreakable magic. Rocks ping off the shield as Levi pulls out a small swirling stone. He holds it up at eye level while saying a few words, and a portal appears before him.

“Go. It should take us to Lucifer’s throne room. I have to be the last one through,” he coaches, and one by one, everyone slips through as I hold the shield. Eyeing the falling rocks as they hit my shield, I ease up close to the portal, and grab Levi’s hand. And with a deep breath, we slip through at last.
