“That’s what I thought,” he says and turns to look at me. “And you’re Elayna’s biological son?”

“Yes,” I growl out, not liking that he threw in biological there. Moni is as much Elayna’s daughter as I am her son.

“Did your parents ever tell you the story about their younger years? Miss Teal or Elayna?” he asks as he gets up and starts pacing behind the sofa.

Moni and I share a confused look.

“Your silence is answer enough. Your parents were best friends from a young age. They were closer than most siblings. They even had a pact that they would try to marry brothers so they could officially become sisters. Did you know that?” He looks over his shoulder at us.

“Mother didn’t mention much about her relationship with her best friend except that they at one time loved and dated the same Demon,” I admit.

“Did your mother tell you who that Demon was?” he asks, turning to face us as he leans over the back of the sofa.

“No, and I didn’t ask. Figured he didn’t want me around, so why ask for the name of my sperm donor?”

Lucifer’s eyebrows raise to his hairline, and it would almost be comical if it wasn’t for my frustration.

“Why does any of this matter?” Moni asks, leaning into me, her shoulders rounded and hugging her knees into her chest.

“I’m sorry this is uncomfortable for you, Moni, but I promise there is a point,” he states.

“Mind getting to it?” I urge, my frustration easily coming forward.

Lucifer smirks.

“Did you know that your mothers used to sit on that very sofa over twenty years ago? Used to drink tea, laugh, and tell me stories of their childhood?”

“Why would they do that?” Moni starts, but I gasp as I connect the dots and bolt upright from leaning into her.

“You?!” I spit out with a mixture of disgust and awe.

Lucifer holds his palms out, trying to placate me. “Will you let me finish?”

I reluctantly lean back and wait patiently for the answers I didn’t know I was craving.

“I fell madly in love with your mothers, and we were together for a few years. We spent time in Purgatory and on Earth. But Marjoriekine started to change and pull away. She often accused me of loving Elayna more, which wasn’t the case. I even pulled away from El to show Mar that it wasn’t true, but nothing would change her mind.”

Lucifer sits back on the sofa and runs his hand over his hair. “Shortly after that, Marjoriekine approached me and explained how they thought it was best to end our relationship instead of their friendship. I wasn’t one to insist on breaking up what they had before me, so I let them go, with the caveat that if they wanted to come back, I would be here.”

He lets out a heavy sigh and reaches for another drink. He quickly downs it and looks back at us. “It wasn’t until I received a letter from Marjoriekine stating that the Sulks had claimed Elayna that I knew she was never coming back. I couldn’t even attend her funeral because I wasn’t notified until weeks after she was gone.”

“I know I’m slow and all, but what does this have to do with us?” Moni asks. “I mean, besides making the bad choice to stick your wick in Miss Teal,” she says with a sneer.

Lucifer chuckles and looks at Moni. “Your mother wasn’t always like she is now.”

“Pfft. Yeah, and I’m the Easter Bunny Shifter.” Moni crosses her arms and stares at him. I swear, she’s harnessing Rez. “The point is, she’s evil now and runs with the Rebels.”

“What?” Lucifer’s eyes go round as he looks between both of us.

“Yep, what she said. She’s a part of the Rebels,” I parrot.

“When did this happen?” he asks.

Moni shrugs. “Don’t know when it happened, but Rez and I found out a couple of weeks ago. Saw the tattoo and everything.”

Lucifer’s head drops and his shoulders round as he lays his head in his hands. It’s the realest I think he’s ever allowed himself to be in front of us.

Moni flies over and places her hand on his shoulder, and he jerks at her touch.
