“I’m sorry. You just seemed sad.” Moni’s voice comes out unsure, worry etched on her face, until Lucifer reaches over and squeezes her hand.

“Thank you,” he says, then clears his throat. “The reason I'm bringing all of this up is because of my vault.”

“I knew it!” Moni screams and flies away to the far side of the room. “He brought us here to kill us. No witnesses, JP. Run for it! We’re going down. Code Red! Call in the enforcers,” Moni yells as she zips around.

“Moni! Calm down,” I yell, getting up and trying to follow her movements. It’s like following a deflating balloon around the room.

“He’s come to seek his vengeance. I didn’t even get to try pegging yet. Chester is gonna be so disappointed.” She stops right in front of me, grabs my shirt and yells, “JP, I can’t die yet!” And faints into my arms.

I pause for a moment with my jaw dropped as her words finally register. Pegging—umm, no. Just no!

I walk back to the sofa and carefully lay her down. Looking over at Lucifer, I see he’s walking back to us with a box.

He must have gotten up while I was running after Moni.

“She does that a lot?” he questions.

“She’s actually way off mark since we’ve been down here. She would have been on number twenty by this time if we were home,” I tell him. “Do you want me to wake her?” I ask, giving him a chance to decide.

“Do you think she will agree to a blood test?” Lucifer asks instead and sets a long black velvet box onto the coffee table.

This definitely took a turn that I wasn’t expecting. Without answering him or taking my eyes off of him, I shake Moni awake.

“What did I miss?” she asks, popping up. “Oh, well, I see he hasn’t killed us yet. Yay.” She settles next to me and wraps her arm through mine as Lucifer opens the velvet box. Inside are needles and vials.

Does he just keep them hidden around places, or can he conjure them like Levi can?

“No, but he wants us to take a blood test.”

“Why?” she asks.

“It got me thinking when you mentioned Elayna. I had given them permission to travel to my residence and never revoked it, so they could pass through any wards or barriers.”

Okay, but where is he going with this? I swear, being down here in Hell is making me feel slow.

“That still doesn’t answer the question of how you portaled into my vault. Only those with highborn Demon blood can make portals into Hell and allow those with them to pass through without a protective device unharmed,” Lucifer says, running his hands over the black fabric lining the box. “Neither one of you has ever been to Hell. Correct?” He glances up at us as our silence speaks volumes for us. “Yet you both ended up in my residence, and your friends joined you unharmed,” he points out.

I glance down at Moni and see her turning magenta. Yep, she’s about to go again; this time I might join her if he says—

“I think you’re my children.” He looks up at us, and I watch Moni roll off the sofa as all sound becomes muffled for me. My head falls back against the sofa, and the only word I can think of to express all of this is, “Fuck!”

CHAPTER 31

Knick Knack Paddy Whack, Give the Guys a Stone

Rez

After Astaroth’s warning, I decide to hurry up and check on Lilith. I’m anxious to see what the timetable is for the potions, and if she can help me with the other spell I found in her book. Of course, I make a few wrong turns, and somehow end up in a massive room with monstrously high ceilings and a floor entirely made up of trampolines. Why L.A.M.B. has a trampoline room, I can’t even begin to guess, but it sparks some pretty interesting ideas before I remind myself about my limited time. But soon enough, I find her study. I’m happy to find Lilith at her table with the Demstones—a stack of five set aside for the merchant—and the Bat flowers already laid off to the side. Maybe if she’s in a good mood, I can ask her about my tattoo as well.

“Hello again,” Benny says, climbing up to the tabletop. “Did you have any trouble finding the rest of the ingredients?”

“Nothing we couldn’t handle.” I smile down at the small helper.

“Benny, could you please start deseeding one of the Bat flowers for me?” Lilith asks as she turns to smile at me. “Hello, Rez. So glad to see you. Levi said that you had an idea about another spell?” she asks, raising her eyebrows and waiting for me.

“Oh. I guess he beat me here.”

“Yes. He just left a few minutes ago with some ingredients, saying he wanted to work on a spell in his room. He didn’t say what, though,” she says, waving his actions away, and goes back to smiling while waiting for my answer about the spell. “What was the other spell you had in mind?” she asks once more, prompting me to get back on task.
