He could still hear her laughter as she closed the door behind her. He hoped, for her sake, she found the perfect partner to fuck tonight. After all, that’s what the masquerade was all about. A no-strings-attached release of hormones and energy.

With the bottle of block clutched tightly in his hand, he turned the light off in his office and closed the door. Phoebe’s desk was neatly stacked with papers, organized for the day after tomorrow. Her computer screen was black, but there was a sticky note on the monitor reminding her to send an email to Jax Logan, a wolf shifter from the north.

He headed past the elevators and opened the door to the bathroom. It was a huge black marble room that served as a changing room as well. The top floor of his building only housed there his office, the long waiting room that had Phoebe’s desk, and the bathroom.

He had it built specifically for silence and comfort and, of course, his convenience. He stripped off his business suit and donned one more suitable for a masquerade party. He folded what he took off into a neat pile and placed it on the circular sofa in the center of the room.

After applying a generous amount of block to his person, he felt ready to leave his office building. He grabbed his clothes and made his way down to the garage parking area where his black Land Rover sat.

He didn’t drive it for the prestige. He purchased it originally for its practicality. It was one of those SUVs that was rated as one of the best off-road vehicles money could buy. So, why not?

But now, people knew it as his. They recognized his vehicle before he stepped out of the car. He liked that.

Magnus pulled out of the garage, made a left into city traffic, and stared at the red light he was currently seated behind.

“Naturally,” he muttered to himself.

Callum’s four-hundred-acre estate was nestled in a remote wooded area. In order to get there, one had to know where to go. It was a dark, winding road bordered with trees on each side. For shifters, there was no better spot.

For humans, well, Magnus chuckled at the thought. No human in their right mind would trudge up there. It was eerie. Callum had done well choosing his pack lands. He, like Magnus, took every possible measure to keep the members of his pack safe.

Callum was a wolf and Magnus, a panther, but the two men had always respected one another. They had gotten along well for many years and had fought side-by-side when necessary.

They were friends despite completely different packs and backgrounds. Whereas Magnus was not a big fan of the masquerade, he was relieved that Callum was the host. He knew nothing shitty would happen on his friend’s property.

And since it was impossible to resist the pull of the full moon and the urges it created, Magnus would rather be somewhere he was comfortable. If he couldn’t be on his own land, he was perfectly content with being on Callum’s.

While he would keep his eye on things, he relished the thought of being able to relinquish responsibility to someone else just for tonight. The thought of finding an attractive shifter and fucking her until he was completely drained and sated became an all-consuming thought on his drive out of the city.

It would take him more than an hour to reach his destination, but once he got there, he had a single goal in mind. And for the first time that day, he was eager for the night to begin.

ALEXIS

The bar was crowded, smelling of stale beer and sweat. Bodies were packed together, side by side, along the counter in an impatient heap. Dollar bills waved around frantically in an attempt to attract the bartender’s attention.

Alexis was glad she had already been served before that massive crowd of twenty-one-year-olds barged in. Her friend Lillian eyed the young group with disdain. They were loud, disrespectful, and vulgar.

She shook her head in shame. “God, that used to be me.”

Fiona laughed. “Let’s finish our shots, and then I’ll brave the crowd and get a new pitcher for the table.”

She gestured to the tray of shots in the center of their table. Four little glasses stood in a row. The clear liquid inside promised a night filled with entertainment and … if they were lucky … a lot more.

What better way to celebrate a birthday than with a series of shots?

“Come on, it’s the best they’ve got, and it’s my birthday.” Alexis grinned at her friends. She picked one up and held it out.

The only one hesitant was Chloe. “Shouldn’t we pace ourselves?”

Lillian rolled her eyes. “For fuck’s sake, Chloe, let loose, would ya?”

She took the shot Alexis held out and downed it in a single gulp, grimacing as it made its way down her throat and into her stomach.

“Oof, that shit is strong.”

Alexis laughed as she wrapped her fingers around another shot glass and followed suit. Fiona went to the bar for more drinks but came back a moment later with a key in her hand rather than the pitcher they had been expecting.
