Finally, the smaller panther managed to throw Magnus off his back, but the two were back at it in seconds, rising on their back paws to bat at each other with enormous, sharp claws.

Alexis didn’t know what to do. She felt frozen to the spot. She couldn’t look away as they continued to attack over and over. Claws ripped through the air, and sharp teeth flashed in the moonlight as they fought. At one point, Magnus let out a howl when the smaller panther got a swipe in, ripping the skin near his shoulder.

But he seemed to shake it off, coming around for a lunge on the smaller panther in turn, sinking his teeth into his leg and holding on. The smaller panther got free by kicking his other leg into Magnus’s face, forcing him to let go.

Hiding her eyes between her fingers, Alexis peeked through to watch as the two beasts went at it again and again, though the smaller one seemed to be tiring, retreating further after each unsuccessful attack. Magnus was strong, using his size to his advantage by dominating the smaller one, forcing it to fight while on its back or leap straight into the air to avoid his claws.

Finally, Magnus slapped the smaller panther down with his paws, forcing it onto its back again, and this time, he got his jaws around the other panther’s neck.

Ice flooded her veins at the idea of watching Magnus murder someone in front of her. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out.

The other panther went very still, exposing its belly. It seemed to be submitting to Magnus’s authority, and as she watched, it shifted into Carvin.

Her eyes widened at the sight of the other man in front of her, naked and flushed from the chest upward.

His gaze landed on hers, and he ducked his head, cheeks turning a deeper shade of red before turning and running for the house.

Magnus waited until the man was far away before shifting back. Alexis was still catching her breath, her heart in her throat.

“I’m so sorry you had to see that,” Magnus said. “Are you okay?”

Alexis stared at him wordlessly as Magnus approached, holding out his arms. Alexis collapsed into them, letting out a muffled sob into his bare chest.

“I don’t understand. What was all that about?” she asked, letting herself be comforted by his embrace. “Why would he do that?”

“Because Carvin is incredibly stupid,” Magnus explained as he stroked her back with one hand. “You don’t have to worry about him trying something like that again, though,” he added. “He wouldn’t dare. I made it clear through our pack link that the next time he tried something so idiotic, I wouldn’t stop until I tore out his throat.”

Magnus held onto her for a while, letting her calm herself and relax in his arms. He stroked her hair while she shivered and tried to forget the sight of the two of them going at it. “I can’t believe he attacked you like that,” she said, voice soft.

“He’s a coward.” Magnus’s words came out harshly, and she looked up at him, his eyes softening upon meeting hers. “But you’re safe with me. Are you okay to get me some spare clothes from the house?”

She nodded and hurried inside, asking around for the host. When she found Callum, she asked for clothing for Magnus, and he pointed her in the right direction. She found a pair of jeans and a flannel that seemed the right size, which she took back to him quickly.

As Magnus dressed, he glanced over. “Do you still want to go to the lake?”

Alexis thought about it for a moment, trying to decide. “No, I don’t think I do,” she said. She shuddered. “I can’t stop thinking about who else might be in the woods lurking around.”

“Do you want to go back to my place then?” Magnus asked, pulling back to look her in the eyes properly.

She shook her head. “No, I just need to take my mind off things, I think.”

Magnus thought for a moment. “Okay. I might have a way to do that. Do you trust me?”

“Yes, I trust you.”

“Would you be open to trying something new? Something a little kinky, maybe?”

Alexis had to admit that her interest was piqued by that idea. “What do you have in mind? Should we get a room?” She wasn’t sure, but she’d always wanted to try a little bit of unusual exploration and maybe delve into the world of BDSM.

“If you aren’t opposed, I thought we might try something else,” Magnus said, leading them back toward the mansion. “There are cabins around the property that function as kink dungeons for the Full Moon Masquerades. I can get us a key to one of the dungeon rooms.”

“That sounds exciting,” Alexis admitted. “I’ve always wanted to do stuff like that, but I didn’t think I could find anyone I could trust.”

Magnus smiled, squeezing her hand. “You can trust me. We should establish a safe word, too, just for extra security.”

“Zack Snyder,” Alexis said quickly.

Magnus chuckled, raising an eyebrow.
