Chapter One

DANE

“Chandler, would you hurry up? We’re going to be late,” I shout to my mate, grabbing the truck keys.

“I’m coming,” he grumbles as he trudges down the stairs, glaring at me. “You’re the one who insisted on having a quickie before going to our best friend’s birthday party. Everyone would have smelled what we did, I had to clean up.”

I can’t help but grin. “You weren’t complaining when I was buried deep inside that tight ass of yours,” I chuckle.

He shakes his head, giving me a quick kiss before walking past me to get outside, so I can lock up.

“Dane, we’re getting old,” he huffs as we pull out of our driveway and down the main road. “Tony is going to be fifty next year and we’re not too far behind him.”

“We’re not old. We’re only forty-two, we still have lots of life left in us,” I tell him, trying to cheer him up. “We’re going to Greece next month. Then Paris after that. We still have plenty of adventures just waiting for us.”

“Yeah, us. Just… us,” he mutters, and my heart breaks.

“I love you.” I place my hand on his knee, squeezing it.

He sighs heavily. “I love you too. I don’t mean to be a downer.”

“You’re not. But let’s try to enjoy tonight. I mean barbecue, beers, and a night out with our friends sounds like a pretty good time to me.”

“You’re right.” He nods, looking over at me with a smile. I know he’s only going for me.

We’ve been together for twenty-one years now. We met back at Calling Wood as fresh young alphas ready to find their omega, form a pack, and start a family.

Chandler and I met at a party, and from that day on we’ve never been apart. We didn’t want more men in our pack, only wanting the two of us and a female omega. The idea of anyone else just didn’t feel right. Only, the omegas we tried to court, didn’t want just two alphas, they wanted more. We couldn’t blame them. Packs are usually three or more alphas and sometimes a beta or two.

We didn’t have a large enough pack to register for the program Calling Wood has available for unbonded packs, so meeting an omega there was out of the question.

We have helped a few omegas through their heats, but that was a long time ago, and it never led to anything more.

After we graduated, we moved back home and took jobs that we love. We met some awesome friends and life was good.

That was until our friends started having babies. Chandler loves kids, and I could see how much he wanted to be a father.

We stopped trying for an omega and started dating betas. Most of our relationships only lasted months, sometimes a year, but in the end, they didn’t want what we wanted. Or they were too insecure with Chandler’s and my relationship.

So here we are, forty-two and it’s just the two of us. I feel like I’ve failed my partner by not giving him something he desperately wants.

We pull up to Tony’s house, the driveway is already packed full of cars, so we park on the side of the street.

“Don’t forget the gift,” Chandler reminds me as we get out. I grab the poorly wrapped box and follow after him. Not that Tony would care about how it looks; he'll only want what's inside. It's his favorite rum from Puerto Rico.

“Hey!” Tony greets us as we step into the backyard through the side gate.

“Happy birthday, old man,” I chuckle, giving him a quick hug. “For you.”

“Thanks, man.” He grins and wastes no time opening the box. “Fucking hell!” He holds it up. “Best birthday gift ever!”

Over the next hour, we drink beer and eat burgers. I sit back and watch Chandler smile and laugh, enjoying his time. That's all that matters to me– seeing him happy.

“Hey, sweetheart, what are you doing here?” Tony asks.

I look over from Ricky, whom I’ve been talking to about work, to see that Tony’s daughter, Willow, is here.

“I know you said to stay in my room, but I wanted to give you your gift before I forgot.” Willow places a box on his lap and kisses his cheek.
