“You’ve been busy with your studies lately and barely even checked in. What’s the occasion for tonight?”

“Can’t I just have a great time without having an ulterior motive?”

She was quick to respond. “You can, but we both know there are a million other clubs you’d go to. You hate this entire lifestyle, and yet you came all the way here to mingle with criminals?”

“Let’s just say that I have some business tonight.”

Her eyes squinted before widening. “Don’t tell me you’re killing someone tonight.”

“I wasn’t planning to. But keep talking, and I might change my mind.”

That shut her up instantly.

To avoid my wicked gaze, she picked up the bottle to pour us another round. She paused when she saw that the bottle was half-empty. Her eyes wandered between Davina and me, but it was obvious who the culprit was.

Davina was giggling like a little kid and smiling ear to ear. Her eyes were slightly red and quite literally sparkling.

“Jesus,” I mumbled. “Stop drinking. This will all come back to bite me in the ass.”

She slurred, then cleared her throat as Rhea snatched the glass from her hands. “Don’t worry, I’ll take responsibility for my actions.”

I snorted. “As if Aleksei’s gonna believe that. In his eyes, I’m the troublemaker who got you drunk. Just fix yourself in time.”

She groaned. In a split second, she went from being bubbly to being depressed. “I really don’t want this life, for fuck’s sake.”

“You should’ve thought about that before you agreed to marry into this family.”

“Kaya!” Rhea tried scolding me but gave up because I wasn’t interested in hearing it.

“I just thought,” Davina mumbled, “that he would eventually let me go. He came as a knight in shining armor and saved me. I’ll be forever grateful for that, but… the more I spend time with him, the more afraid I become.”

Rhea tried consoling her. “But Aleksei will never hurt you. He might be a ruthless bastard, but he won’t ever do anything to you.”

“I know.” She sighed. “I just don’t want to be a part of this world. I never wanted that. My father being a dirty politician involved in the criminal world was something I knew since I was a kid. He hated me. Hated my sister, too. Yet I was the one getting married off. The one who he quite literally sold for money. It’s making me sick just thinking about it.”

“You can try to escape. I’ll even help, but Aleksei will chase you to the ends of the earth and drag you right back. You have a choice here. Make sure you make the right one, because you won’t be getting a second chance.”

“Okay!” Rhea clapped her hands, returning the glass to Davina. It was now filled with whiskey, and she gave me a glare to which I shrugged my shoulders. “Let’s think happy thoughts. At least your wedding’s been postponed for a while which means you still have a chance to fall in love with him, right?”

Davina kept silent, but her cheeks got pink, and it wasn’t because of alcohol.

“Oh my god.” Disbelief coated my words. “You actually do love him? You’re one confusing woman.”

Davina ignored me.

To brighten up the mood, Rhea switched the topic to Davina’s job. It was only then that my sister-in-law changed her expression. Passion covered her face along with a prideful smile as she talked about her patients and her experience in the hospital. Her heartfelt emotions radiated off her whilst she talked.

I was incapable of feeling basic human emotions. I couldn’t remember the last time I cried or the last time I was sad. Regret and guilt didn’t exist in my vocabulary. Taking a life was as easy as drinking water.

However, I knew how to read them very well. I’d trained myself, and, given that I was majoring in psychology, I had to learn how to show them when necessary. But it was difficult. Giving fake smiles was harder than most of the things I’ve experienced.

My thoughts vanished, and my brain emptied entirely as I saw him enter through the back door.

That door was used for emergencies only. Oftentimes, given how many different people came here, a fight would ensue. The owner wanted nothing to do with that, and he didn’t care who got hurt or killed. However, since there were a lot of petty bitches that would afterwards be banned from ever attending again, the police were called a lot. That exit was only for the most important people.

He strolled in, an expressionless face as always. He wore a black turtleneck with a leather jacket. Even from across the room, I could almost feel how hard his abs were, defined even underneath the thick material.

My heart skipped a beat.
