“Why?” Dominik’s voice echoed the room, the rest of us just as curious.

“Because this one is in the middle of nowhere. It used to be a factory, but it’s been deserted for almost five decades. It was shut down because it was deemed too dangerous.”

“Dangerous? Were they making nuclear weapons inside?”

Aleksei didn’t appreciate the sarcasm in my tone, though he didn’t counteract it.

“No fucking way,” I muttered. “Are you serious?”

“Well, on the outside, it wasn’t used for that. Someone chickened out and ratted the boss, and it didn’t take long for all of the workers and bosses to be arrested. It’s been inactive ever since.”

“There can’t be any nuclear weapons ready to be used inside of the building, right?” Xenia asked. She leaned against the chair, fidgeting her fingers on her lap. She did it all the time when she felt anxious.

“Of course not,” Aleksei responded with a snort. “But since Bogdan is planning on using it, there must be something inside. We’ll know more tomorrow.”

Aleksei’s eyes scanned every single one of us until he returned his attention to the paper in front of him. He pointed with his finger towards the entrance.

“We won’t use the main entrance. My men will be stationed there twenty-four hours before the scheduled meeting. We’ll use the back entrance to attack. The men will all be hidden and will reveal themselves at my signal, killing everyone. The main goal is capturing Bogdan alive.”

“Who is going there?” Davorin questioned, speaking for the first time since our arrival.

“Ilya, Vladimir, Danila, and you. There will be twenty-five people waiting there.”

Davorin nodded his head.

“This is an emergency exit.” He pointed towards a door that seemed to be hidden. “It’s behind a shelf. If things go south, you won’t have enough time to access it, so I’ll have the shelf removed beforehand.”

Then, once he was certain everyone there understood their roles, he took the other building’s outline and resumed speaking. “Dominik, Ivan, and I will be going here.”

I stopped him before he got the chance to speak again. “Where am I going?”

His brows furrowed. “You are on house arrest until all of this is over.”

I laughed. “No. If you don’t take me with you, I’ll come alone.”

“It’s too dangerous,” Xenia butted in. “It’s honestly best if you stayed with me.”

“No one asked for your input,” I snapped. “You can’t seriously tell me that you want me excluded from this? It’s about me, Aleksei. I get to make the decision about it.”

“Oh, really?” He snorted. “Then, tell me, what will you do when you become a distraction and the men focus on saving you instead of capturing our father?”

“I can take care of myself.”

“Can you? Can you really? Because it seems to me that you don’t quite understand this situation. They sent you a picture of Rhea, and you went to them. Do you have any idea what would’ve happened to you if Dominik and Davorin were even a minute late? They got to you so easily. And this time, I don’t know who is working with Bogdan. Do you realize that they want you dead? The moment you become a bigger issue, they will get rid of you, regardless of you knowing where the children are.”

That seemed to raise multiple questions. Xenia was confused, and Vladimir and Danila exchanged confused, curious glances. Aleksei hadn’t disclosed to them what this was truly about.

“You can’t keep me out of this, Aleksei. I won’t allow it.”

“Give me one good reason why I should let you come with them. Only one.”

“Because I want to be the one who puts a bullet through Bogdan’s skull. I’ll lay low until I see him and then kill him.”

“I need him alive, Kaya. And now that I know you wouldn’t follow through with the plan, it’s just another reason for you to stay the fuck away.”

“No.”

It became a screaming match. No one interfered, though I noticed how rigid Adrik’s shoulders had become. His hands were fisted, knuckles white. He was pissed as fuck and just waiting for an opportunity to tell Aleksei off without interrupting me.
