“I swear to God, Ekaterina. If you so much as sneeze in the direction of this building, I will—”

“Careful, Aleksei.” Davorin’s harsh voice made my brother look at him. “I’m running out of patience here. I’m suggesting you stop with the threatening nonsense while I’m being nice.”

“You sure are acting brave for someone who wants Kaya dead just as much as Bogdan.”

Silence.

It was what tipped Adrik over the edge. In an instant, he had a gun pointed towards Aleksei’s temple. My brother didn’t look too concerned, but everyone else, excluding Xenia and Dominik, had their guns drawn and pointed at Adrik.

It was a staring competition, and no one was willing to lose.

Davorin, whose rage was visible, and Aleksei, whose pride never faltered.

The tension was getting insufferable. The air felt thick. Everyone was on edge, waiting to see who would make the first move. As if to taunt my brother further, Davorin took the safety off with a small grin on his face.

“What do you think will happen here? You killing me, or them killing you?”

“I don’t know. Let’s see, shall we?”

“You’ll kill me, but you’ll also be dead. Who is going to protect Kaya then?”

Davorin smirked. “Aren’t you a few years too late to worry about her or her protection? Be honest with yourself. You failed as her brother. No need to act like you care now.”

Damn. The sour look on Aleksei’s face threatened destruction, and I had to step in before it got to the point of no return.

“Okay.” I jumped from my seat, clapping my hands. “That’s enough. Aleksei, I’ll join Davorin, and that’s nonnegotiable. If I die in the process, so be it. And you.” I turned to Adrik. “Calm down. I don’t want two funerals anytime soon.”

No one backed down. I would’ve had better luck talking to a wall than these two.

“Or, I’ll go alone and then you can deal with that mess.”

That grabbed their attention. In unison, they all lowered their weapons. It was as if nothing had happened, and they continued discussing the plans. Although, I saw the clear distaste on Aleksei’s face. He was going to use this opportunity to get rid of Adrik.

He never actually liked him, and, in his eyes, Davorin had crossed the line. That was why I’d insisted on going. Otherwise, it would’ve been easier to sit back, wait for them to finish the job, and relax.

“Now,” Aleksei said, clearing his throat, “the day of the meeting is in a week. No one else knows about this aside from you. My men that went to scout the premises were fed some bullshit story. I can’t risk blowing up an opportunity like this.”

“What if he doesn’t show up? What if both locations turn out to be a set-up?”

Xenia’s question was smart. For the most part, she’d kept quiet. The way she stared at one irrelevant spot with furrowed brows and so much focus indicated that she was in deep thought.

Dominik took the initiative to respond. “It’s a possibility. However, at the moment, Bogdan doesn’t know that Belushi opened his mouth. We will be prepared to annihilate all of them if that’s the case.”

“And then you’re counting on me to find him,” Xenia concluded for him, almost whispering. “I’ll need help. It’s impossible to do it on my own.”

Davorin chimed in. “Felix will help you.”

“Now that the main issue’s been settled—” Aleksei paused for no reason other than dramatic effect. “You understand what will happen. Go in, grab Bogdan, kill everyone else, and burn the buildings to the ground.”

No one spoke, but the silence was loud.

Aleksei continued with some small details that I found boring and had no interest in listening to. I zoned out completely. They continued speaking for another thirty minutes before it was finally over.

“Ekaterina, a word,” Aleksei said.

Davorin looked at me, reluctant to leave me alone with him. But with a weak nod and a smile, he left alongside everyone else, leaving me with my brother.

“What’s up?”
