I was on my way out, and I noticed that both Ilya and Danila had taken their leave. Without glancing in Davorin’s direction, I walked towards the door.

I felt his touch on my wrist, stopping me.

“What do you want?” The sharpness on my tongue only made him tighten his grip on my wrist and pull me closer towards his body. For whatever reason, I obliged.

“Be careful.” He spoke tenderly, yet venomously. “If there’s so much as a scratch on your body, I will take you to an island, and you’ll never roam free again.”

“Sure, that’s a condition I can agree with.” I shrugged. Davorin wasn’t exaggerating, but he was doubtful of my response.

With a low sigh, he put on his mask, released me, and led me outside, where a car waited for us.

Ilya was in the driver’s seat with Danila next to him, leaving Adrik and me in the backseat like two kids. The silence was uncomfortable, unbearable.

“So.” I cleared my throat lightly. “What’s the plan?”

“Not again,” Ilya mumbled, most likely reminded of the last time he and I had a mission together. Back then, I hadn’t listened to a word Aleksei had said and had to ask Ilya for the shortened version of the plan.

“Nothing too complicated,” Danila responded, taking the lead. “You’ll be with Davorin, so just follow his lead.”

I mumbled something incoherent under my breath but didn’t miss the way Adrik threw me a stare. Either he understood that I’d cussed him out, or he had something to say but decided against it.

It was supposed to be Danila and me. I should’ve known that Adrik wouldn’t just sit back and allow that.

My heart pounded in my chest. Stress was slowly getting to me. Playing with the watch on my wrist kept me occupied for a while, though it didn’t last. We had at least another hour left in the car, and, as the darkness settled on the horizon, the intense sensation of my skin crawling made me slump further into the seat.

“Did Dominik and Aleksei arrive yet?”

Adrik glanced at me, my uneasiness transferring to him. He broke the silence in an attempt to calm me down, but, deep down, he wanted nothing more but to throw me out of the car and leave me behind. He already sensed how bad this would be.

“Yes.” Ilya’s simple response came quickly. “I’ll call him once we arrive, and after that it’s no contact unless it’s an emergency.”

Then, he looked at me through the rearview mirror with furrowed eyebrows. “And there won’t be any emergencies. This ends before sunrise.”

“Was anything discovered in the building?”

“Not at all,” Danila chimed in. “It wasn’t wiped clean, so the stench is almost unbearable, but there was nothing that could be tied to the previous Pakhan or anyone who works for him. It’s safe to assume he picked the location because it’s one of the buildings that are set to be demolished soon, so any evidence would be destroyed.”

Upon arriving, I waited until everyone had left the car. We had a few hours of boredom ahead of us. I silently trailed behind the three men that were engaged in a conversation I was not interested enough to pay attention to.

I stuck close to them, my stomach twisting and turning. From the very beginning, I knew how this night would end. Yet, now that it was all so close, I was afraid of things going south.

The opportunity was one in a million. If I missed it, I’d never do what I was truly destined to do.

Yet again, Davorin caught me by surprise. My eyebrows were raised as I watched him remove his earpiece and block it from anyone on the other side hearing. Then, he took my hand and led me away from the other two.

“Listen,” he said, his voice low. “I spoke to Aleksei a while ago, and there’s something you need to know.”

My heart threatened to leap right out of my chest. He looked serious—too serious for my liking. My lips thinned into a line, and my hands trembled.

He traced circles on my palm in a comforting way, yet it didn’t help ease my nerves.

“He’s suspicious that Bogdan always managed to kill all of his informants and that he magically knew where you were.”

“Yes, I know that.”

He took in a sharp intake of breath and that was when everything clicked in my head.

“No way.” I shook my head. “It’s impossible.”
