She shook her head. "No."

"May I ask why?" There had to be a reason she was so bent on rebelling, and I'd never been so curious in my entire life.

"No, you may not." Then she went back to scribbling on her sketchbook.

I huffed out an amused breath. Felicity Wiley was an interesting woman, and fuck me if I didn't want to find out more about her.

"I'm guessing you don't like it when people ask about you,” I tried.

She didn't bother to raise her head. "You guessed right." She passed the sketchbook to me. "What do you think about this? The avatars should be diverse. I've always thought avatars that look alike were crap. Animals could also be avatars, but with a little twist."

The not-so-subtle change of topic did not escape my notice. Nevertheless, I looked at the sketches.

"You're good," I said, taking in the expert lines and strokes that curved into rough faces. "Why did you choose video games? You could've been a world-renowned artist."

When she didn't say anything, I lifted my eyes to look at her. Her gaze was fixed on me, and I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me that she disapproved of the questions.

"Come on," I scoffed. "That's a harmless question."

"Doesn't mean it's not personal," Felicity deadpanned.

"What's your aversion to personal questions? Are you some sort of criminal who requires anonymity to function?"

She gave me a look. "What about you? When did you start writing code?"

"Fifteen. A neighbor noticed my interest and started giving me classes."

"How many languages do you know?"

"Five: C++, Java, Dart, JavaScript, and Python."

She stared at me for a moment, not saying a word, and I wondered if I'd finally managed to shut her up. Then she opened her mouth, and I held back that curse at the tip of my tongue.

"Whatever,” she said. “Just because you're so generous with your personal information doesn't mean I am with mine."

"For fuck's sake, what will it take to get you to answer a question without being so guarded?"

She regarded me with a look that might as well have said I was crazy. "I don't know you. I don't have to tell you anything."

The words flew out of my mouth. "I want to know you."

That made her pause. "Why?"

I tried to shrug nonchalantly. "You seem interesting. And we’ll be working together for the next few months, so why not?"

"I can assure you that I'm not."

"Let me be the judge of that."

Felicity was hiding behind a wall that had been perfectly constructed to keep people away, and I was determined to break it. Or at least make a crack in it. I just wanted a peek at what lay on the other side.

After a few seconds, she sighed. "Fine. Ask away. I'll choose which questions to answer."

Eh, that was better than nothing, and I'd take what I could get. A light bulb went on inside my head, and after weighing the risks, I decided to go for it.

"Let's start with easy questions, then,” I began. “What did you do last night?"

I watched with absolute ecstasy as her eyes widened and her cheeks flushed. Oh, the urge to recreate last night, in person, burned furiously within me, and I had to physically stop myself from reaching out and touching her by tightening my fist on my thighs.
