I’m going to be able to have a little house for me and my child in a small town where hopefully nobody is connected to the Russian mafia.

Not a soul will know me there.

Hey baby. I put my hand on my stomach, a sense of relief flooding over me for the first time in months.

We’re going to get out of here and then everything is going to be okay. We’re going to have the best life possible.

The moment I heard the heartbeat on the hospital bed, I knew that my baby had become the most important person in my life. I will do whatever it takes to keep us safe.

Even if that means confronting the baby’s father when he tries to storm his way into my life and tear it down from the inside.

Even though I want to believe that everything is going to be fine, there’s a little voice in the back of my head that insists I made the wrong decision.

Dad wanted me to run. I ran.

And now my only choice is to keep running.

Chapter 12 - Sergey

The cracked stones of the apartment are stained with dirt. People pass by on the street as I lean against a tree, keeping myself hidden in the shadows.

I don’t want to risk Anna seeing me when I could have the element of surprise.

Some people glance at me, more so than they would in New York. This is a small city, and it seems like people want to be in your business here.

That’s not going to go well for me.

This is why I plan to drag her back to New York where I can take care of her without anyone paying attention.

The few friends she does have think that she dropped off the face of the earth. She didn’t send them a message before she disappeared. She didn’t tell them where she was going either.

I had some of my men watching Natalie and Hazel online for weeks and none of them were able to track down anything about her.

I should have been paying attention to the connections of her friends. The ones who clicked ‘like’ on their posts.

That was where Denis had found Matt, a man who spends his days helping people disappear.

Now nobody is ever going to find him.

It’s a shame that he had to get in the middle of my personal affairs. If he had just called me before helping her get a new identity, he wouldn’t have been shot. He had just been on the phone with Anna when I found him. Perfect timing.

Oh well. You live and you learn.

Poor Matt won’t be doing any learning any time soon.

I chuckle and look up at the windows of the building, trying to catch a glimpse of Anna.

How perfect would it be for her to look out of the window right now?

I pull the cigar from between my lips, letting the thin ribbon curl to the sky.

I can’t wait to see the way those pretty lips are going to part when I get my hand around that neck.

The sun is dipping low on the horizon as Denis appears beside me.

I put out the cigar. “What have you found out?”

Denis was sent here a couple of days ago to keep an eye on Anna. She doesn’t know that he’s watching her, but he’s been following along with her daily routine for days now.
