“I will explain later. I’m a little distracted now.”

“Are we going to die?”

“Not on my watch, angel. I told you that I would do everything in my power to protect you and keep you alive.” Sergey grits his teeth and sends us careening in the wrong direction down a one-way street.

He steers the SUV onto the sidewalk, and a few people jump out of his way.

“What the hell!” I scream, hands flying up to cover my face as he nearly takes out an old lady with a walker. “You’re going to kill someone!”

“It’s us or them!”

The wheel spins in a rapid circle as he whips the car around to face the attackers.

He drives straight at them, one of his hands grabbing my head and pushing me down as our car flies past theirs. He lets go of me as more shots echo through the air. There's a loud bang before the car spins out of control.

“Hold on tight.” Sergey grips the wheel, doing his best to steer as another tire is shot out.

The side of the SUV hits something hard, my entire body jolting.

One moment I’m upright and the next I’m hanging upside down from the seatbelt and the smell of smoke is thick in the air. Everything around me is a blur and my head is spinning. There is a red hue to my vision and a sticky warm liquid trickles down my forehead.

I put my fingers to the wet spot, and gasp when I see blood on my fingers.

“Sergey!” I scream, looking at the empty seat and the crimson stains beside me. “Sergey!”

This is it. We are going to die here. Sergey is already dead. The baby. God, help us!

This isn’t how I’m supposed to die.

My hand drifts down to my stomach as I blink rapidly, trying to see through the windshield and around the dented hood. When my vision clears enough for me to look around, I see him outside the car.

If I thought he looked like an avenging angel before, now he's taken it to a new level. He charges through the smoke to the other car. Three men get out of the car with their guns raised, but it’s too late for them. Sergey shoots all three before they can pull their triggers.

My gasp rises above the clamor outside the car. I struggle with the seatbelt, trying to undo it so I can crawl out of the wreckage.

He tries to fire another shot, but the bullet does not leave the barrel. He throws the gun aside and rushes at the fourth man who gets out of the car.

There is a flurry of fists as the man falls to the ground. Sergey looks like a man possessed, his face nothing but pure rage as he fights like hell.

The other man takes an advantage, pinning Sergey to the ground and slamming a punch into the side of his face. Sergey’s head snaps to the side.

Even from here, I can see the blood trickling down his face.

He laughs, grabs the man by his collar, and throws him to the ground. In a second, he is on top of him, his men pouring out of the cars behind him.

I thrash against the seatbelt, looking for anything I can use to get free as flames start to flicker from beneath the hood.

“Sergey! Help!” I scream as loud as I can, searching for anything I can use to cut the seatbelt.

Sergey takes the man by the head and slams his face into the ground. It is nothing but a mess of torn flesh and blood when he lifts the man and crushes his head again.

The flames flicker higher as I continue to scream. My throat hurts and my entire body aches, but I must do everything I can to free myself.

I can’t die in this car. My baby can’t die.

The world goes black as thick smoke chokes the air.
